Any without ghosting?
I keep reading complaints about all the eink readers with ghosting after ever few pages...wouldn't this make the ereader less enjoyable to use?....are there eink readers without this problem or should i just buy something like a sony prs 300 and save the headaches?

Any eInk device which does a full page refresh each page turn is pretty immune to ghosting - that's the purpose of the refresh. It's only this new nook which has decided, goodness knows why, only to refresh once every six page turns.

Kobo have come to their senses and released a firmware update which allows the user to select the frequency of the page refresh. Although there are many other reasons that I wouldn't personally recommend the Kobo.

I have never noticed any ghosting with my Kindle 2. And after a few days I hardly ever notice the flash to refresh the page.

The main thing is that it's PURELY a touch reader; unlike the nook, it has no page turn buttons. Touch screens may have their uses for selecting books, etc, but personally I like good old-fashioned buttons when it comes to turning the page. The Kobo also has significant software limitations, such as the fact that it doesn't support hyperlinks in a book. That, to me, is a very significant limitation.

I have rarely noticed any ghosting on my Kindle while reading, and if it occasionally does while I'm using other functions, there is a keyboard shortcut to refresh the screen which always works (alt g).
I also am not distracted by the page refreshes on any current generation eink reader I've tried. I tried the new nook STR in the B&N store today and was pleased to find that even with the 1 out of 6 refreshes, I did not see any ghosting, at least not in the 2 minutes I tried flipping pages with it. I haven't noticed ghosting with my Sony 350 nor my Kindle3.

EVERY e-ink device has some degree of ghosting. I own a PRS 350 and a PRS 950 and I can assure you - they do have ghosting.
Yet, the truth is, while you are reading, you would be hard pressed to notice. Ghosting is certainly more noticeable when you have a uniform background - for example, on my 350, if I open a uniformly dark picture after reading text, I will notice the text ghosted. Yet, I have to look for it, it's not like it jumps at you. How much ghosting bothers you depends on your tolerance for it. And do understand that how much ghosting you get depends on how quickly the page updates and how intense the page-turn screen flash. Kobo made, at least initially, the mistake of going for a quick page update with minimal flashing, which led to more visible ghosting. But really, don't over-emphasize the issue. As Pomtroll's post exemplifies, in everyday use you will not notice. |
