New user to Nook Color with question

Hi. I just bought a Nook Color after being perfectly happy with my Sony 350. This was a gift for my anniversary and upcoming birthday. It is so different but mostly so heavy!

I am not yet sure I like it, so I have some questions:

1) Has anyone gotten the new Nook? How does it compare? Is it pretty much the same without color? Can you surf the net? (A friend has the 1st gen and it looks so antiquated, lol)

2) I don't read outside a lot, except during wait time at softball games. What is best way to decrease glare?

3) Does anyone find this heavy and if so, have you gotten used to it?

4) Are there instructions on rooting? It looks like best option is to run a separate OS from an SD card. Any tips?

Thanks.

Hello! Congrats on your anniversary and what a fun gift! If you are used to your 350, then the NC will definitely seem heavier. It is light compared to the typical 10" tablet like an iPad. I have mostly gotten used to it. They do sell anti-glare screen protectors which help but reduce the screen contrast a bit. I still use my e-ink ereaders outside unless I'm in the shade and can turn up the screen brightness.

The new Nook touch reader is very similar to your 350 except with a 6 inch screen. Like the 350 it does not have a web browser or audio player. It does however have Wifi so you can buy books direct from the B&N bookstore from the ereader. It does not have landscape viewing or zoom/pan. It does have more choices for font size and type. So if you are happy with your 350, then you probably don't want to trade the NC for the Touch unless you want a larger screen or B&N store integration. Hope that helps!

My advice is DO NOT root. It will void your warranty. I run CM7 from a mSD card. This does not void warranty and is 100% reversible. I followed the directions on :

http://nookdevs.com/Portal:NookColor

And it works great. I am running CM7 which opens up the Kindle App (yes I read kindle books on my nook color), and all of the other android apps. 90% of the time I still use it as a E-Reader, I just use both Kindle and Nook books on it so I can not go back to the base OS.

I thought it might be helpful to explain how I use the NOOKcolor compared to eink. I use it mostly for magazines, and books where color has a noticeable advantage such as photography or cooking. I also use it for light browsing, mostly for convenience factor. I also like the word games, and I love listening to Pandora music channels! It is also great for low-light reading especially night-time. I use my eink readers for long reading sessions and when I'm outside. The B&N app store is definitely sparse. I would recommend CM7 on an SD card if you want access to a greater selection of apps.

1) No comment on one except from what I hear the device is real fundamental. No browser, where the noun cooler is a lot more like a tablet.
2) Outside the best thing I could recommend, is stay in the shade, use white background, and set the screen to the brightest setting.
3 ) yes it was heavy compared to my kindle. But I have gotten user to it.
4) I run CM7 on my eMMC, way better performance than running it off of the sdcard. But the sdcard is a good start especially if your toy have any trepidation about installing new OS.

BTW I'm writing this post on my nook outside watching my niece graduating. yes I'm bored, but tutu the point is it's readable in sunlight but nit as good as an eink.

The new Nook is absolutely NOT the Color Nook without color. In fact, it is further from the CNook than the old e-ink Nook. For example, there is no browser in the new Nook.

I believe that B&N deliberately made the new Nook into a plain-vanilla ereader, period, partially to distinguish it from the Color Nook. They are 2 different devices for 2 different uses (although you can use the Color Nook as a reader, of course).

If you don't have any interest in color reading (magazines, comics, cookbooks, kids books) or tablet functions (movies, web, maps, PDA functions, games, apps), then you probably are better off with e-ink, even an older reader. Using the NC solely for reading text e-books is like buying a car that you only use to go to the end of the driveway and get the mail.

If you want a device for Android apps, putting CM7 on SD is a great way to go. SD will not necessarily perform any slower or worse than an installation on eMMC (the internal flash storage), but it is somewhat luck-of-the-draw how well it will perform. People have the best luck with 8GB or 16GB Sandisk cards, class 2, 4, or unclassed. Everything I used to get set up is at the link in my sig.

As far as the weight, it's counterintuitive, but I found putting a flip case with a picture-frame type stand on the NC made it much more comfortable to use. It actually adds weight, but between the stand and the cover flap, there's almost always a way to hold it that takes most or all of the weight off your hands. I went with this case: http://www.javoedge.com/store/e-read...ble-nook-color

I also got 15% off by googling "javoedge nook coupon."

Yes, it is heavy - the first weekend I had mine, when I was playing with it pretty much constantly, my wrists ached ferociously afterwards.

I don't use mine as an ereader, except for those few .pdfs that won't work on my Sony. Even then I use a stand and set it on a table or lap desk.

After having mine for a few weeks now, I truly believe it was born to be a video player and not an ebook reader. The screen is breathtakingly beautiful.

Now if the xda developers could find a way to make the bluetooth work further away than six inches, I'd be a totally happy camper.

(I, too, am running CM7 from the SD card).

I don't have any problems using the NC as a reader, especially factoring in comics, which are awesome on this screen. It's my only reader and quite a serviceable one. Still, if you're not taking advantage of any of the color/tablet functionality, why not go with something lighter-weight and longer lasting?

I'll also repeat the case recommendation; I'm a large enough mammal that a 1lb device is no great hardship, but a case still made a world of difference in comfort, between taking off the hard edges and having a couple of extra supports dangling right off the device.
