Bad luck with my PRS-600

I have just received my new PRS-600 device.
Enthused, putting the usb cable to my PC slot, I saw it starting to charge.

Calibre, which was running attempted to send my books to the device
Sony Library, which was running on my computer requested me to install the firmware.
I chose 'yes' for the firmware upgrade and tried to close calibre forcefully.
The firmware started to run, but the GUI on my PC indicated that it failed.

Since then, my reader is stuck on the 'Updating Firmware now..' screen, and Resetting it doesn't help.

my PC stopped recognizing the reader and I feel like I'm stuck without the opportunity to see the reader in action. I became desperate.

Can one of the tech savvy guys here help me with the situation? Is there any way to hard reset the device?

Thanks in advance

Saw this on another issue someone had. It is instructions to reset to factory defaults

Here's the procedure he gave me for resetting the device back to factory default:

Note: Performing this procedure will delete any content you have stored on the Reader.

1). With the reader off, using a paper clip or similar device, press in and hold the Reset button on the back of the unit for 5 - 10 seconds.

2). Release the reset button and power on the reader.

3). While the reader is booting, press and hold both the Volume Up and Mark Buttons. Continue holding until you see a screen asking you to confirm that you want to reset the device back to factory default (Press Button 5). Note: I had to hold down these buttons for about 60 seconds to get the confirmation screen. Also about half way through this process, you should see a blue light flash momentarly around the lower left Page button.

4). After you have confirmed you want to set the device back to factory default, the reader will turn off. Turn the unit back on and it will go through its initial startup which takes a minute or two.

shrktank, Thanks for your help!

Just one question, what's that 'Mark' button you're talking about?
Where is it located in the device?

It's the BookMark button. Not sure if there is one on the 600. We may need new instructions for resetting the device.

Did you try pressing the Reset button on the back of the 600, then turning it on?

(and yes, I've learned the had way not to have Calibre running when I hook up the device)

No bookmark button on the 600. Confused me in the beginning. (Don't know how to do the reset, though).

I have become quite familiar with resetting my PRS 600 - as I talked with customer service about my EBL problems they have had me reset it a number of times.

Everything is the same in the above quote except for step 3. Instead of holding the Mark button. You hold the back button (looks like this "<") and the volume up button. You may have to hold it for up to 1 minute. It will ask you if you want to delete all content and reset it to factory settings... you then push the options button for "yes" and the screen will flash a few times then restart itself (no need to push the power button in my experience. You then get back to the original welcome screen and the initial setup of your reader.

Hope that helps.

When removing the USB cable, I get the following message: "Firmware Update did not end successfully. Please try again."
When connecting the cable back to my PC, it gets to "Updating Firmware now..." phase, but it doesn't actually updates the firmware (believe me, I waited for a long time)

When resetting and turning on, I get the same "Firmware Update did not end successfully. Please try again.".

Sony should have invested more in the quality of this product and tackle such issues, reset to factory default should be the last resort.

I tried to hard reset using your instruction.
While I can reset my device clicking the reset button for a second, and then powering on, the device didn't turn on when clicking the reset for 5-10 seconds (sounds weird but that's what happened).

Have anyone ever managed to hard reset the device?
I feel desperate since I've been trying to run the reader for a day now and couldn't find any solution to the firmware failure.

Any suggestions?

My colleague tampered with the windows device manager and then manually installed the device firmware. As a result, the problem was fixed.

Thanks everyone for your help!

My PRS600 is dead. Computer can't recognize the device. Can you tell me how to tamper the Device Manager so I can install the firmware manually? Thanks so much.

What do you mean dead? If you only mean that it isn't recognized by your computer, try just resetting it before doing anything more drastic.

Try plugging your 600 into a different computer and see what happens. It may not be your 600 that's the problem, but the computer you are trying to use. Also try all the USB ports of that computer and different cables too.
