Remembering Books/Loading Speed When Connecting Device
I seem to recall at some point in the past a modification was made so that Calibre remembered the books on the device so the loading speed was quicker on connection (hope that made sense).
I just updated to 7.55, and the device connection job is now taking more than twice as long as it did before the update (Kindle, on XP, about 1200 books). Also, the green check marks indicating books on device aren't showing up until the very end of the job, which didn't used to be the case. Has something changed? Might I have screwed up a setting or be doing something wrong? |

Nothing that should affect that has changed as far as I know. WHat could have happened is the on device cache got corrupted and had to be rebuilt. Does teh time increase happen on every reconnect, or only the first one?

Again, are you seeing it on every connect?

Another question, are you talking about the total time from when you plug in the device or the time from when calibre says "device detected".
Only the latter time is affected by caching. The total time can be increased if you have some other device like an adroid phone/tablet connected to your computer that calibre tries and fails to connect to before trying the Kindle. |

Kovid:
Yes this is on every connect and I am talking about from the time the job starts until the time it stops. EDIT: Also the only device connected is my kindle. Last edited by nynaevelan; 04-16-2011 at 09:58 AM. Reason: additional info |

OK do the following, get the file metadata.calibre from the root of your Kindle. Save it somewhere.
Now start calibre, let it connect, then quite calibre. Now get the file metadata.calibre again and post the two copies here. (be aware that doing so means people will know what you have on your kindle). If you dont want to post them here open a bug, mar it as private and attach them there. EDIT: Another useful thing to do is run calibre in debug mode (click the arrow next to preferences) then connect your kindle. Post the debug log. |

The three files can be downloaded from here. Interestingly enough the original file is 16 mbs whereas the new one is less than 1 mb. And with the new one it is alot faster to complete.

I'm confused, are you saying that now that the new one exists, subsequent connections are fast?

Are things really working? Are you seeing 'on-device' checkmarks? Does the metadata.calibre file contain lines like "author_sort": "something reasonable" as opposed to "author_sort": "Unknown"? |

No they aren't, I tried the process again but the same things are happening. I also have no idea how to look into the file to see what is in there.

Sorry for disappearing - I'm seeing it on every connect too. I've repeated it numerous times - disconnected and reconnected the Kindle (K3), exited and restarted Calibre, in various combinations. Sometimes the checkmarks show up right away, sometimes they don't, but in all cases, it now takes at least two minutes, if not more, from the time calibre detects my device until the job is finished. That was not the case prior to the 7.55 update.
I'll do the metadata.calibre file harvesting and post them here as well. |

Okay, posted before and after metadata.calibre files, and also debug log, in a new bug: 763177. Both metadata.calibre files are exactly the same size. The time it takes to connect is not changing - it remains significantly longer than it used to be. Whether or not the on-device checkmarks show up immediately, or only when the device connection finishes, appears (to me) to be random, but it doesn't affect the total amount of time connection takes: between two and four minutes.
