Future of Borders?

I know that the Borders stores in our area are all closing, but I am wondering if the entire chain, including the online store, is closing?

The reason I am asking is because I have just purchased a Borders Slick ereader from our Big Lots as a gift. While the recipient will be largely downloading books from the library, I would still like to know they can purchase books online with this ereader.

They are not all closing. In Ann Arbor, where their headquarters is, they had three stores. One is closing but the other two are still open. I'm local and I haven't heard any rumors of the remaining two closing. They're doing the re-org thing, and they're certainly struggling, but they're not out yet.

Also, Borders gets their ebooks from Kobo, which is another company and isn't in trouble. So even if Borders goes away your gift recipient should be able to get books from Kobo.

Borders is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which means they are planning to reorganize and continue as a business. They will be continuing to sell ebooks through their website. Even if Borders went out of business, the company operating their ebook store, Kobo Books, says that they are not dependent on the survival of Borders. You, or your gift recipient will also be able to buy ePub ebooks from several other retailers, like Sony, Diesel, and Books On Board. You won't be able to buy books for it from Amazon (incompatible formats), Barnes & Noble (incompatible DRM) or Apple (incompatible DRM), unless you're willing to violate the DMCA (assuming you're in the US) and strip the DRM.

Thanks! The recipient of the ereader has expressed an interest in getting one and likes the idea of downloading the books from our library system. So, I think for the price, this would be a good "see if you really like it" ereader.
