Kindle 3 firmware files
Amazon don't delete the firmware files off their S3 storage system immediately. This means that you can still download older versions if you adjust the URL as they all follow a strict naming scheme. These links are all direct from Amazon.
The current preview version as of 13 Feb 2011 is 3.1. There doesn't appear to be a release version. You can NOT downgrade firmware on a Kindle so only apply firmware updates if you're absolutely sure that you want to risk it. There may be bugs or issues which would need another update from Amazon to fix. As always, do this at your own risk. Applying firmware updates always has some risk attached to it as you may end up with a non functional device which requires service by Kindle customer services. I'll try to keep this post updated with any new firmware and remove any links that no longer work. Quote:

Probably not the correct thread to ask but since you mentioned it:
There is no hack or method of rolling back a firmware update? Merely placing an older version in the root and running the "update" menu item won't do it? Is there some key or field in the update-bin file that could be edited to allow it? I'm relatively new to the k3 and did upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.0.2 3.0.2 which are mentioned is curiously missing from the trenches, yet 3.0.3 is still considered beta. |

No. The firmware updates are actually a series of binary patches. The patch is one way only as it doesn't contain the original contents. The only way to roll back is to extract a full copy of the firmware from another Kindle and put it back on.

Added 3.1 -
From looking at the contents of the patch itself, they've changed the Mobi/AZW/Topaz reader (see Amazon site - Journal, page numbers, public notes and "Before You Go" book rating), PDF reader, image viewer, browser, indexing, graphics including GUI libraries, audio, power management, WiFi driver and support files, eInk driver and USB driver. Its still a massive collection of patches so not a complete firmware image. Its significantly bigger this time because its got quite a lot of patches from previous firmware versions. There is a patch from 550570115 as well which is odd as I can't find any mention of that firmware by anybody at all. Last edited by Tiersten; 02-07-2011 at 08:44 PM. |

Amazon have added support for something called a sponsored hotspot which is related to AT&T hotspots. I assume its something like you get access for free (or discounted?) if you're using an AT&T hotspot with your Kindle.
3.1 also breaks the jailbreak. It used to look for any public key which meant it would use the one added by the jailbreak. They've now altered it so that it specifically only checks the two Amazon Kindle public keys. This means all hacks will NOT be able to be installed. Code:
-KEYFILES=$(ls /etc/uks/*pem) +KEYFILES="/etc/uks/pubprodkey01.pem /etc/uks/pubprodkey02.pem " Having USB network access means you can alter the 3.1 filesystem and install/uninstall anything you wish along with reenabling the extra key in the otaup script. Again, don't do this if you don't know what you're doing! If you apply 3.1 to your existing hacked/jailbroken Kindle then it will disable the jailbreak. This means installing and uninstalling hacks will NOT work when using 3.1. Just a warning... Last edited by Tiersten; 02-08-2011 at 12:40 AM. |

The 711 info screens are different as well now. It has a different arrangement and also has a sponsored hotspot flag.

Can someone provide instructions for how to copy the firmware from one's Kindle to one's computer (before overwriting the firmware with an Amazon update) in order to have the option to restore the old version of the firmware? Tiersten's comment (10/23/2010 8:27pm) implies this can be done, and that it's apparently the only way one can restore a previous firmware version.

Grizedale, you're disagreeing with Tiersten, who wrote: "The only way to roll back is to extract a full copy of the firmware from another Kindle and put it back on."
Assuming Tiersten is correct that a Kindle can be rolled back given a full copy of older firmware, that appears to imply another Kindle with older firmware won't be necessary if one exercises some foresight: Prior to installing an Amazon update, make a full copy of the firmware of your Kindle, so the copy will be available later if you want to roll back to it. My question is, what is the procedure? What are the steps to copy the firmware from a Kindle? What are the steps to restore the copy to the Kindle? |
