Is a "footer" with links possible in epub?
Hi all,
I am working on a scholarly epub edition of George Herbert's 1633 book of poems, The Temple. In the edition I will be presenting multiple versions of the same poems, for example: clean text, modernized, 1633 facsimile, and various manuscript versions, as well as my own editorial notes. What I am trying to do is create a list of links to the various other versions of the poem at the bottom of each page. Is this possible? Or will I be forced to just manually include this at the beginning and/or end of every poem? I am working with the PRS-950 so I could just code it to the bottom of the page, but I would like it to be readable on other ereaders as well. I would like to be able to make the links almost like the Periodical footer that Sony uses. Something that is not disruptive to the reading experience. Any thoughts? Thanks, Matt |

It is possible with PDF, where the whole page is "hardcoded".
It could be possible with ePUB, if the reader supports the "display: oeb-page-foot" property described in the spec. As far as I know, no reader does. It might be possible with ePUB, using the proprietary Adobe page template extension, and it would work in any reader using the Adobe engine (most of them). But this is a non-compliant way. I'd suggest you use some other method instead, like adding links at the beginning and end of each poem. I did something similar in the multilingual version of Dante's Divine Comedy, where I included links to the other languages every 5 stanzas (15 verses). |

Argh. Thanks, Jellby, this is what I was afraid of. I suppose I will have to add it at the beginning...
But maybe I can keep it at the end of short poems. I'm going to take a look at your Divine Comedy... |
