Reading Chinese on PB360

Hi all,

I just got my PB360 about a month ago, pretty happy with it so far. Had some initial problems with Overdrive ebooks, which seem to be mostly solved with the 15.3b firmware upgrade. The problem now is that I can't read Chinese on the device.

Following the instructions on the PB websites as well as in the MR forums, I've tried dropping different chinese fonts (both simplified and traditional ttfs) into the system/fonts folder, and I've tried reading different file formats (prc, epub, txt, html) but nothing seems to work. The roman letters read fine but the Chinese characters just show up as the dreaded rectangles. Is there a specific font that I need to use?

I'm running firmware 15.3b from http://pocketbook-global.com/downloa...60_ru_15_3.zip. I don't think I've made any other major tweaks. I didn't try reading Chinese before upgrading the firmware, so I don't know if it worked on the original settings.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Make sure the encoding of your files is correct. You'll probably want UTF-8. Depending on where you got those files they might be encoded differently.

Also please read your text/book with fbreader. If you do so, you can configure your decoding options via quick menu/configuration and see what decoding method works. In any case, chinese can be read without the slightest problem with your PocketBook.

Thanks both for your suggestions, I tried them all but nothing worked. The good thing is, I think I've found the problem - but unfortunately not the solution. It appears that it's not just Chinese fonts I can't read, it's all fonts other than the default!

My device doesn't seem to detect anything I've dropped into the system\fonts folder. Weird thing is I can't find the default font file anywhere either, and I'm displaying hidden files as well. When I'm in FBReader config and I select the Font option (which says default,25), I get taken out of the book and back to my bookshelf.

I have a feeling the solution is going to be something quite basic but I can't figure it out just now

Just to close the thread, I figured out the solution and everything works fine now. My styles.xml was for some strange reason in system\config rather than system\fonts. I moved it over and all's well.
