Question about 350 downloads

I just bought a Sony 350. This will be just for epub library books. I've had AND LOVED a Kindle 2 since February (and will continue to use it for everything else).

Here's my question: Upon reading directions to download a book from my library (on the Sony screen), my directions told me not to unplug the device until the "Do Not Disconnect" sign goes off. Well, that worked for my first book. The next two times that I tried this, I waited and waited, thinking this is ridiculous. So (and I'm not usually a rule breaker,lol), I disconnected anyway. Guess what? The book was on my reader--both times.

So, what's up? How do I know when the book has appeared on my reader?
