Are files saved as a single file?

I've read that it's better to save each chapter of a book as a separate html source file to use in creating an epub file, because each new chapter starts on its own page in the epub book and not as a continuation of a page---It looks more like a paper book.

A review I read says that Calibre only "saves the epub book it creates as one big epub file instead of splitting chapters into separate files."

Can someone shed some light on this for me?
Can Calibre save an epub file compiled from several html documents---by chapter---so that my chapters start on new pages in the epub book?

Thanks

The review is wrong. If your input document is already split the output epub will also be split, furthermore calibre has very powerful options to split input documents that are not already split. Look at the options in Structure detection and epub output

You could argue that they are both right. An epub is a single file, but under the covers it is a zip file containing multiple files. The html part is split into small chunks, typically less than 300k in size. If a html book is already split, then I believe that the split is maintained. If it is a single HTML file, en Calibre tries to detect the chapter breaks as canidate points for splitting the html.
