I hate page numbers ARGH!
Hi. The problem I'm having is in the Sony PRS-300. I don't know if it's the reader or Calibre's converting but the page numbers only show up every 3rd or 4th page turn, depending on the size of the font I use.
I had one document, I don't remember where I got it or which one it is now but it didn't have page numbers and everytime I changed font sizes the Sony would re-correct all the page numbers. In small it was 480 pages, in medium it was 923, and large would be 1463. (I made up the numbers, I don't remember exactly what they were but you get the point.) I've tried saving the books in .txt in .rtf, in almost all the formats and I make sure I've reflowed the document and it's considered one page but the page numbers show up in the smallest possible readable font everytime and Sony uses that to count the pages. Any help please? I'm drawing a blank on what to do or try next. Doran |

The page numbers are a 'feature' of the ADE epub reader supplied by Adobe. I think a search of the site for 'page numbers' would show that nobody likes them - except for somebody in charge at Adobe. Almost all the readers that support Adobe DRM have these numbers - I think I heard that the Sony 900 doesn't have page numbers, but I've never seen one to check.

I'm afraid that's not true - I like them. They provide a device- and font-independent way of referring to a position in a book, and that's extremely useful.

OK, a programmer is allowed to be 'off by one'...

Their real use comes when you're reading the same book on different devices. The fact that "page x" refers to the same point in the book on any ADE device is extremely useful, especially when using devices with different screen sizes.

I also like the ADE page numbers; they give me a consistent understanding of how much more there is to read, unlike a progress bar or page numbers that relate to screenfuls of the current font size.
I think the annoyance comes mainly from having them appear inline with the text. Graham |

It can be useful to have something that serves as absolute reference (independent of font, margin, screen size, etc.), that's what HarryT and many others like. It's (in my opinion) stupid to have some small "page numbers" shown on the margins, sometimes overlapping the text, and with no possibility of disabling them; I don't think there's many people who like this.
As for ADE page numbers being really absolute and device-independent, that's only true as long as you use an Adobe-based reader, if you use a different software, the page numbers (if any) will likely be different. But don't forget that paper books also come in different editions, with different number of pages, so the potential problem with referencing is not new. The good thing with electronic texts is that it's fairly easy to search for a specific text or sentence. |

Ok, I'm confused (timpany, please-heh.) Is there something I can do to change the Adobe reader in my Sony? As for formatting I've simply gone back to saving in plain text.
I do own Adobe Acrobat 9. I don't like book covers on the prs-300 so I'll open the .PDF file I want to use, in it, then export it usually as a .DOC if I have a lot of editing to do, or just a .TXT file for quick edits in MS Word:Mac 2008. Then I'll save it as a .TXT file and use Calibre to make it into an EPUB with an extended .CSS for font options. So are you saying that somewhere in that series I can make sure no page numbers are created? If there are directions could you please give me the URL and I promise to be quiet and sit in the corner like a good little boy? hehe Thanks, Doran |

Actually, the page numbers are only created by the reader if the file doesn’t already have a premade page-map. There were some experiments a year or so ago about creating a dummy page map that was basically empty, but it seemed that the general consensus was that it wasn't a great idea to try this. You can find the thread on the topic here.
