Scary movie time!
I caught an early showing of The Last Exorcism with a friend today. We settled in with popcorn and snacks, and I prepared myself for the worst. An hour and a half later, I emerged untraumatized. This is, of course, both good and bad, since I'll be able to sleep tonight BUT I never really got the good scare I was hoping for. So then I got to thinking about what makes a great horror movie and all the times I have been seriously shaken by a film.
Without a doubt, my favorite horror movie is The Exorcist. After I saw it for the first time, my roommate and I had to hide the dvd because we were so irrationally freaked out by it. The last recent horror movie that I really liked was The Descent. (I mean, claustrophobia, gooey cave creatures, and murderous women? Love it!) So tell me MobileRead, what's your favorite horror movie/horror movie moment? |

I have too many of them to list. Horror is my favorite genre.
I like the classics and all of the different horror subgenres. I have quite a few DVDs and VHS collected over the last 20 or so years. |

a REALLY bad movie from the late 70s I think the name was "It's ALIVE!" and it was about a monster/demon/alien thingie that a woman gave "birth" to. it slaughtered her and everyone else in the delivery room
I was 6 months pregnant at the time... |

I too find The Exorcist tops on my horror list. I will never ever forget that creaking sound on the sound track when her head rotated 180 degrees - and that face! Slept with a light on the night I saw it.

I am more frightened by documentaries! Scary movies tend to leave me too cynical.
A book scared me once many years ago. "The Red Dragon" Although years later it didn't seem so scary. Must have been the circumstances. |

I get made of all the time by my friends for this. But Paranoramal Activity had the best scary ending in my opinion.

No judgment here; I thought I was gonna have a heartattack when the demon peeled back the covers. Don't the movie rules say that if all your limbs are tucked safely under the covers, nothing supernatural can get you? You can't just peel back the covers and drag me out of bed! That's totally cheating!

I can't think a really scary movie that creeped me out - I'm sure there were a few from when I was younger. Most recently I guess I'd have to say "The Ring", it was a fairly original concept and creepy in just the right way. One that scared my was Jurassic Park, the book not the movie. I'd take the dog out at night and be seriously expecting a raptor or one of the camouflage dinosaurs to jump out at me. |

Personally, I don't think there should be rules in Horror movies or books. Bottom line: the monsters are gonna get you in the end, no matter what. Monsters break rules, that's where the real fear comes from.

Absolutely. Breaking convention is what makes for a truly scary moment. That being said, when I'm alone in my apartment at night, I choose to believe that my covers give me some semblance of protection. You know, the whole if-I-can't-see-you-you-can't-see-me deal.

Nightmare on Elm Street. Wolf Creek. Went to see Wolf Creek on the recommendation of a little old lady I knew. I didn't realise that she was so bloodthirsty!! Cheers. |
