Trouble with SD Card

Hopefully it's ok to post this here, because although it is not specifically related to Astak, this is how I read books on my Pocket Pro.

I seem to be having issues with my SD card. I've got around 200 books loaded on it, and some times when I put the SD card in my computer it has a difficult time recognizing it. But after some tinkering, it always ends up working. But before I go any further, let me check to be sure I'm doing this right: typically when I take my SD card out of my pocket pro I switch over to the internal memory, then remove the card. I transfer whichever books I want, then click the "remove device" button on my computer, then pop it out of the slot, and back in to the Pocket Pro. Is this how I'm supposed to do it, or am I supposed to turn off the Pocket Pro each time I remove the SD Card? I've just been doing it this way rather than using the USB cable, as it seems much quicker and easier, and I don't have to dig the cable out of my dresser.

Well, today when I popped the card into my computer, it showed up as G drive, but when I clicked on it, Windows Explorer hung up. I tried closing it down, and it came back with the lovely message that the program was not responding. I tried to click on the remove drive icon at the lower left hand corner of the screen, but nothing happened. Finally I tried restarting my computer, but the whole thing froze up. After about 15 minutes I finally just turned it off, let it sit about a half hour, and came back to it and turned it back on. Windows Explorer popped up after the computer rebooted, and then when I tried to click on the G: drive it said the drive was not formatted, and would I like to format now? I said no, as I don't want to lose all my books. But it still won't let me click on the G: drive. So does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? I'm thinking I should go ahead and format it (whatever that means... I'm really not that technically minded, but I'm assuming my computer knows what it's talking about) and just reload all of my books and folders back on with Calibre, once it's done formatting. If I do that, should I delete everything first off the SD card, or just let the computer do its thing? I really don't know what I'm doing, and I would appreciate any advice so I can get back to reading! I also want to put the new firmware on, but it's not letting me put that on the SD card, either.

Thanks for the help!

Due to previous problems with removing an SD card from my computer before the computer had cleared the buffer, I ALWAYS:

Turn OFF the PP before I pulled the SD Card. And have it OFF when I reinsert it.

After saving and deleting onto the card in the computer, I go to another simple program, make a simple change, and SAVE that file, thus clearing out the buffer before I pull the SD card out of my computer. I know this is probably overkill, but since I have been doing this, I NEVER have had any problems.

I cannot "safely remove" SD card using the Windows icon because for some reason that kills the port and I have to reboot the computer to reinitiate that particular slot. By clearing the buffer/cache, my card comes out just fine.

As far as what to do now with your problem, I don't know. I've not had any expeience with that problem.

Good Luck

AJ

Thanks, AJ. I don't think I want to turn it off each time, because I don't want to have to reset the clock each time I add a new book. So I think the best thing for me to do would be to go ahead and use the USB cord and add books that way.

Here's another strange thing... I just tried putting the card in my computer again, and it popped up with this little "auto play" window, and a searching icon, like it was looking for some sort of file. But then that box went away, and it didn't open up the Windows Explorer box. I wish I had another SD card I could try... maybe I could use my daughter's from the Palm I gave her. I need it more than she does... *l* But I guess I don't want to do that. It's a new SD card that I bought just for the Pocket Pro, so hopefully it's not a bad card...

Well, I thought maybe I should be more specific about the messages my computer is giving me. So I put the SD card in, opened Windows Explorer, and clicked on the G: drive. After a few minutes of thinking, my computer came up with the message
Quote:
The disk in drive G is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?
So I clicked 'yes.' Windows Explorer stopped working for a bit (the whole window just went white for a bit while it was thinking), then the following message popped up.
Quote:
There is no disk in drive G.
Insert a disk, and then try again.
I clicked ok, and that's that. I've tried doing a restart, and I still cannot see the contents of the SD card. This puzzles me, because it was working ok in the reader this morning... the trouble didn't start until I popped the disk into my computer. I put the SD card back into my Pocket Pro to see if it would work, and it works just fine. So I got my USB cord out and connected it to the computer, and voila, the computer suddenly sees the removable disk! This is just too weird. I will keep playing with it and if I figure out what I'm doing, I'll post an update.

Ok, so here I am again... sorry, you're all going to get tired of me... I was able to get the new firmware on the SD card by connecting the Pocket Pro to the computer. Right now I'm updating the firmware on it, then I'll remove the card and pop it back in to my computer and see if it works...

Ok, so now Windows Explorer opens it up, when I put the SD card in my computer... too strange. Maybe I just need to keep experimenting before I panic and post on the forums seeking help...

Do you have a camera or another device that uses an SD card (and that can format it)?

If so, I'd be tempted to copy all the books etc off the card, then format it in the camera.

jusmee, we do have a camera. I could ask my husband to do that. He'd know more about it than me. Thanks for the suggestion!

I also tried to load my sd card by putting it directly in my computer and it did not work. Although my computer shows that there is stuff on the card the ez reader does not recognize it when inserted directly. Funny enough, the firmware update I did download directly on my computer to the sd card and things seemed to work. Perhaps the specific method of download actually affects the file in someway. Anyways, I think the only way to download books correctly for this ereader is through the usb cable.

Yes, I'm thinking it's best to start going the safer route and always transfer using the USB cable.

Is there a particular reason you remove the SD card instead of plugging the PP into the computer and having both the internal memory and SD card show up? That way you don't have to remove it at all.

Also, Calibre can detect the reader when it's plugged in via USB, you don't need to insert the card into the reader manually. Just plug the USB cable into the reader and the other end into the computer, select OK on the reader, then start Calibre. You can then save to either the internal memory or the SD card.

This is how I do it and it's much easier than moving the SD card around.

The PEz and Intel 82801series (Win XP) USB2 drivers do not play nice together
Not being equipped with USB2 protocol analyzers, I can not say which end is at fault (or if there is any SINGLE fault. Both ends may just be at opposite ends of a tolerance.)

Since these USB chips are found in a Majority of major brands, I find it odd that there are not more complaints (there are others, here and over at Calibre), since 3 out of 3 brands of my computers have this problem.

RobertB at Astak also recommends using a "card reader" as being faster.

To be honest, the main reason I like to remove the card from my Pocket Pro rather than using the usb cable is just laziness. I find it much quicker to pop out the card, slip it into my computer, copy the files, remove it and pop it back in my Pocket Pro. I know it's not that much quicker, but when I have something in particular that I want to read, that goes faster for me. Besides, every time I connect my Pocket Pro when I have Calibre running, Calibre takes a while to look through all the books and check to see what's on the Pocket Pro. (I've got a netbook, so it can be slow sometimes. ) But I might try doing more often with the USB cord, since I seem to have fewer problems that way.

Dear Davimee:

Yes, I do like loading my eBooks onto my SD card using a card "reader-writer". It is faster and I just find it the best way.

I just want you to relax about posting. This is a forum and that means discussion. Nobody on here knows everything (and maybe I know the least on some subjects). There are experts on here (many) and ALL of us have started with the device just like you.

I like to think that the greatest asset of this forum is certainly not me... but experts who got that way by trying things and getting help. Never feel reluctant about posting.

Look at me. Much of the best material on our FAQ sheet got there because somebody asked a question and somebody else posted a great solution. I copy their solutions (asking for permission first) and place it into the FAQ sheet on: www.theEZreader.com under "support". The FAQ sheet just keeps growing and getting better that way.

AND... I make a lot of mistakes still. I get corrected on here many times and am grateful for the correction. You are certainly most welcome here and feel free to ask questions. If we ever stop with new people asking questions we might as well close Astak. New people are what makes this forum work.

Thanks, Robert. I'm really thankful for these forums, and all the helpful people here. If I hadn't found this forum, I probably would have never bought an ebook reader. And I am really enjoying it!
