Get a netbook and throw some lame Linux distro on it and you are good to go. Just install open office, stanza...etc.....

The Kindle, Onyx and iRex devices have SDKs so choose your poison. Have not used any of them.
Linux mag had articles on getting X up and running on the older kindle. |

A netbook is not an option because of the screen, unless you tell me of one with an e-ink display. It would be an ideal solution if I could flip the screen as in a tablet.
SDK's are not MY poison, I'm no programmer, but it could allow someone to port a spreadsheet app to any of them... I think I saw gnumeric on iRex already... |

Have you considered waiting for the upcoming tablet devices? Notion Ink has announced one that uses a Pixel QI display. That would be perfect for your needs - full color backlit LCD for multimedia use, or disable the backlight and you get an ambient light based display. Some very cool tech coming down the road.

Perhaps you should wait for the new PocketBook302, it has a linux system running and a touchscreen for notes etc. It also has wifi, usbhost and some other features.
