Reflashed 500 not working on Macbook

I just got my PRS-500 back. I have never used it on my Macbook. I have always used it on my old Windows machine.

I downloaded the latest Sony Reader software for the Mac. I plugged in the PRS-500, and it shows the icon, but says "error".

Needless to say, I can't get the software to interact with the PRS-500. Has anyone else had this happen?

I'm also frustrated to see that a book I purchased, and wanted to read, is not available yet in epub. All of the books on my PRS-500 were erased, so I was hoping to restore them through the Reader Software with new epub downloads.

It should just show up as a removable drive now. Does it have power? The epub update is causing the readers to use a lot of power now and they even come back discharged.

The ePub update is not why they come back discharged.

It came back charged. I noticed in the fine print that Mac version 3.1 of the Sony software does not support the PRS-500.

I've just installed calibre, and am going to forget trying to get the Sony software to work.

I "authorized" my PRS-500 for Adobe Digital Editions on my Windows machine.

Can I now just buy a book from wherever I want, using my Mac, and load it onto my PRS-500 with calibre?

I'm not really sure how it works, since all of my prior purchases were directly through the Sony Library software.

Yes, you should be able to. That is how many bought books for the 505 before the Sony for Mac software came out.

I'll have to find a really cheap book just to test it out.

I see that Sony won't let you buy a book via the web.

If I want to use the Sony Store, can I buy the book with the Library software and then use calibre to actually put it on the PRS-500?

Sorry for the newb questions.

Yes.

Right.... Sony won't let you buy right from their web site. Lame isn't it.

Most of the book stores offer a free DRMed ebook to test your software/dl setup. Like BooksOnBoard.com for example http://www.booksonboard.com/index.ph...ndGreen_ebooks

Now that I've left Sony's software, I'm realizing what a pain DRM is.

I downloaded Adobe Digital Editions onto my Mac. I ordered a test book from booksonboard, and it worked, but what a pain!

There are now a couple of extra steps, and the book itself does not look as good as lrf format did. The font seemed to have less contrast.

Maybe this particular book was a fluke, but if I can find a book in lrf format, I think I will prefer that over epub.
