Kindle and Library Digigital books
I received a Kindle for Christmas from my mother. She had remembered I had mentioned the library had free digital books for e-readers.

NOW I find out that the Kindle is the only e-reader that you can't download books from the library. A friend told me about Calibre, so I checked out a book from the library on Overdrive epub format. I then had to download Adobe digital reader. So now the book is in Adobe digital reader on my laptop and I only have seven days to read it.

I can't manage to drag it on my laptop from Adobe Digital Reader over to Calibre to convert and then transfer to Kindle. Any suggestions?

I was going to return it and get a Nook, but alas, I had already downloaded a promotional book from Amazon, thinking I could use Calibre to take advantage of free digital books from the public library.

Also any suggestions for free books more recent than 1923? I am unemployed and rely on the library to support my reading habit.

Kindle has many free book offerings daily. There is a thread in the Kindle forum that point them out. You can't drag the book from ADE to Calibre to convert because it has a DRM attached to it to prevent conversion. In order to convert it, you'd need to first strip the DRM from the book. As this is not strictly legal in many places, doubly so as this is not a book you've purchased, it's not discussed directly on this forum. If you google, you'll find sites that do talk about how to do that, however.

I get some free books from Smashwords (try the Self-promotions forum - there are some free book offerings there right now!) I also have a book giveaway ending soon on my blog. Googling will get you lots of sites to find free books, you just have to sometimes wade through the offerings to find what you like.
