Just bought an Aluratek Libre and have questions

I just bought this little reader for a friend and wanted to load some books for her before giving it to her. I have calibre and ADE on my computer as I have a sony ereader and use these programs often. I thought I could just plug it in and send non drm epub or pdf books to the reader but calibre gives me an error. Then I tried to drag and drop from the ADE program it did see the reader at first but no memory card so I loaded the book onto the internal memory of the reader to test it. It worked but now when I plug it in ADE does not see the reader at all. Also can somone please explain how to delete books from the reader both from the memory card and the internal memory?

You can add non-DRMed books by removing the memory card from the powered on unit (while at the root screen), put the card in a USB card reader, drag the books onto the card, then reinsert the card into the reader. I use the direct USB cable connection to add DRMed books using Adobe Digital Editions. You have to add the reader to ADE once, then it will show up in the ADE program (see the instructions that came with the Libre). Then in the ADE program drag the book onto the reader. DRMed books are saved in the "My Digital Editions" folder on your computer. To delete books from the card, take it out of the reader, put it into a card reader on your computer, open the folder for the card, and drag the books into the Recycle Bin. If those books still show up on the reader when you reinsert it, poke a toothpick in the reset hole on the back.

To avoid the syncing problem PodPeople mentions at the end of their post, make sure that your Libre is powered on and showing the main menu whenever you insert -or- remove the SD card. This way it will regenerate the list of books when the card is removed/reinserted.

You can also delete books from the reader itself by highlighting the book, pushing the Function button-5 (delete)-ok.

I think I mentioned this in an earlier thread, but since podpeople brought it up, let me present it again.

As you said, it is easy to transfer non DRM epub books straight to the SD card and the reader will read it fine.

But as for DRM epub (I borrowed one from my public library, have not bought one from a bookstore yet), I find that if I after I download it using ADE, and then use the drag and drop method to transfer it from Digital Editions folder to the SD card, it cannot be opened. If I use ADE to transfer it to the Libre, it will be stored in the Libre internal memory, then it can be read. But if I then transfer the book from internal memory to the SD card, again it cannot be read. Are others experiencing this also? If not, what folder structure do you have in your SD card that allows it to be read or what other files do you have to transfer with the book from internal memory to allow it to open.

I am just thinking about it since I want to have all the books in SD and not hogging up internal memory space.

Well it looks like I will be taking the libre back, for some reason it will not stay charged. I suspected this as happening yesterday but I charged it over night and then turned it on and read for about an hour then set it aside and waited for a couple hours and then tried it again, when I turn it on it will flash to the page I was reading then turn off again a couple of seconds. Has anyone had this problem? I don't know if I should just exchange it or pay the extra money and get the sony.

I haven't had this problem. Are you charging it by plugging the charging cable directly into an electric outlet? I have found that some "power block" type charging cables don't operate well if plugged into an extension cord or multi-plug power strip.

I haven't tried this with a library book, but my Libre has no problem reading DRM ePub from bookstores which have been dragged and dropped onto the SD card.

Be careful, too, about how you hold it. When I first started I had a problem with it shutting off like that - then I realized that one of my fingers was over the on-off button and I must have been putting pressure on it. Once I changed position, no problem.

I charged it with the charger that came with it and it was plugged directly into the wall no power strips or extension cords. I made sure I was holding it properly also. I am going to try another one and I hope I have better luck with it. If not then I will be returning it for a Sony.

Yes - you can only read the library books by installing them directly to memory through ADE.

Well I bought a 2nd Libre and I am having the same issues it will not stay charged. I charged this one completley right out of the box and it seemed to function ok for about 2 hours then it locked up and the screen went black except for a little bar at the top with a full battery symbol and I can't turn it off even. It is too bad I really liked some of the features. I can understand one being defective but two in a row with the same issue makes me wary of the quality of the product. so back it goes and I will buy something else. Thank you to those of you that tried to help me with this.
