Hello from Toronto

Hey guys,

I've been an ebook lover for a while. Project Gutenberg saved me a few hundred bucks in literature since high school. I've volunteered as a proofer and read a couple shorts for LibriVox. I've got a bunch of HTML and CHM ebooks from buying O'Reilly books and boxed sets. Lastly I've started to buy a couple ADEPT ebooks since the DRM has been broken.

I've been using MobiPocket on a Palm m105, Toshiba e310, Toshiba e330, Toshiba e740, HTC Touch, and now I've just sprung for a FoxIt eSlick. I've read far more on screens than I have on traditional books.

eInk readers have always intrigued me. FoxIt gave me a huge student discount so they're finally within reach. In computer science we often use GPL or creative commons licensed texts but endlessly tasking from window to window was never very fun. I didn't want to print because of the cost, and I'd lose the quickfind ability. Eink readers are a great compromise.

I've bought a PDF reader and it doesn't allow loading of other programs, and doesn't yet support and DRM. I found this forum while looking for ways to convert and unwrap DRM. I'm keen on sharing what I learn too, and taking a look at porting chm2pdf to Windows.

Now that the Leafs are idle and Tax-filing deadline is almost over, how about a Meet-Up amongst Torontoians...

I've already had confirmation from a few members (ficbot, shighfield) that a meet-up is warranted and looooong overdue! For our new members, what timing, eh?

Given that the GTA is huge, we should probably choose somewhere centralized and accessible by subway and/or with parking, like Yonge Street. I'm partial to uptown (North York) rather than downtown, but I'm willing to travel.

There will be a month or two advance notice given for the meet-up, so unless, the eSlick is being shipped by mule train, you should get it before then.

Something around Yonge/Eglington would be a good comrpomise I'd think. Plenty of decent pubs around there and it's a good midpoint between North York and downtown.

Thanks, lance. I agree! A centralized location is a good idea, even for us in the suburbs...
