Palma 3 in 2025?

I'm curious to know what's your thoughts on whether there'll be a Palma 3 released this year.

They will most likely reconsider releasing new devices with these trade wars. The following devices were unveiled today - 7' Leaf 5/5c (global Page series), 13.3' T13c (global Tab X series) and colour e-ink monitor Mira Pro with Kaleido3.

Boox is a Chinese company and Norway is a European country, so no tariff war. These companies live from releasing new products, so I don't think they'll stop releasing new products. They might just scale down production (thus increasing prices) to accommodate for failing US sales. Nobody will pay 104% markup prices.

I really want the best small device I can get, so I was thinking perhaps I should wait half a year. But then again, they might not be as keen to release new ones. I don't know, and appreciate all comments on it.

The Bigme Hibreak Pro is in my opinion the best handheld e-ink device currently. I have a white Palma 1, a Hisense A9 and the latest Bigme Hibreak Pro (and an old Hisense A5 Pro, but it won't compete with those 3, obviously).

I used the A9 with LineageOS as my phone until I received my Hibreak Pro, which blows it out of the water performance wise.

The speed and anti-ghosting tech is much better than on the first Palma.

But you might not want to pay extra to have all the phone stuff in it?

Thanks for sharing, kandwo. I googled Bigme Hibreak Pro now, and I clearly see why you're taken by it.

I know it's much to ask, but i would truly appreciate ot if you could do like a video comparison of bigme and Palma. I haven't seen them head to head before like that.

I would gladly pay extra for better performance, even if it means waisting some money on things not needed for me, such as a sim card slot.

Though what's primarily holding me back, to just go for a bigme, is that onyx has a domestic reseller, so I can try before I buy for 14 days. Whereas with bigme I have to pay customs and kind of nail my colors to the mast if I buy it. Cause custom fees aren't refunded if I decide it's not for me.

Typing and browsing speed and how quickly new apps can be opened. It's because when I read e-books I look up every word which isn't in my vocabulary and add it to my flashcard app.

So my experience is usually like this:
*) Reading in my ebook app, finding a new word
*) Switching to Macmillan Dictionaries either in an app or online to find definition of the word (I think this dictionary does it best, perhaps, they're only in app now)
*) Switching to Google Chrome to find an example sentence for the word, sometimes in Oxford Dictionaries (I haven't had a good ereader in a year, dunno if they're still online)
*) Switching to Anki app, where I make a new flashcard. Typing and cutting and pasting to make the flashcard how I want it. Putting in etymology, which I make shorter manually by deleting anything superfluous)
*Switching back to ereader app.

I'm having trouble filming a video with a comparison. I'm not very good at filming stuff.

EDIT: I recommend watching with the sound off. There's some annoying noise in the video.

But here's a video with the same book open in Koreader and looking up a word using aard2 with offline wiktionary. The word is looked up using a long press, which, at least subjectively, is generally faster on both devices than shown on the video. I think it's a bit slower here since I'm trying to balance the camera and press at the same time.

Page turning is a bit faster on the Palma, but there's also more ghosting, as can be seen when returning back to the first page. The ghosting can also be seen in the dictionary when switching between the different dictionaries there. Generally, I have the Palma set up to do a full refresh on every page turn.

There are some other differences like the Palma having better contrast. This is due to my having a screen protector on the Bigme. And the contrast settings are generally lower by default on it.

Generally, they are both fast enough for navigation, writing and that kind of stuff. Bigme is faster when it comes to browsing the web, loading heavy pages, etc. And the anti-ghosting works a bit better than on Palma IMO.

When I was reading, I used to use GoldenDict. May I ask why you opted for aard2? It looks really good. I didn't know of the options.

After reading your review, I thought first that maybe the ghosting you describe would be better on Palma 2, but I googled and see many say nope. Which makes me consider BigMe more seriously.

I'm glad it was helpful!

I actually use both. I find aard2 works better for some languages, since it shows all wiktionary data like conjugation/declension tables for verbs/nouns and etymology. For other languages I use GoldenDict. Koreader can use either without any problems.

The only problem is that GoldenDict is abandonware and has been removed from Play Store. There's a workaround for the official version (provided by the creator of it), and there are also mods that don't require the license. Just let me know if you need any help with it
