Way to change metadata layout?

I've set the metadata window to show both the original and custom columns on a single tab, but I was wondering if it was possible to further change the layout of the window since I'd at least like the tab showing the cover to still be on the left as in the default settings (as well as maybe move the Comments section someplace else and hiding the Formats section).

Not sure if there's a way to do this with the program as is or perhaps with some sort of plugin but I couldn't find anything

The only built-in choices are the ones in Preferences / Look & feel / Edit metadata / Edit metadata (single) layout. Changing these requires changing calibre base code.
