What do you use User Categories for?

User Categories look very useful, but I'm not exactly sure what to use them for.

What do people on MobileRead do with them?

I use them (together with a user-defined template and a custom column) to setup aliases. You can see example on aliases in this post (also see the attached screenshot)

Edit: Using the same technique you can tag series, and other objects (group them like BR pointed in the post below). e.g. nobel winners, fantasy series ... etc.

Ad-hoc grouping of books, via the User Category optional plug-in.

Caveat the User Category definition tool was enhanced to allow custom columns to be specified, but the plugin only supports standard columns - Author, Series, Tags etc.

I use them for grouping the different alias of an author, too.

Favorite authors, series, or what-have-you.

Favorite books, but you must have a column with the book ID to add to the category. Yes, reading list can do this but with less search flexibility.

Books needing some processing. Same comment as above.

I use it to find all books of any autor who ever got 5 stars from me.
First time giving 5 stars, I add the autor to the user category named «5*».
After that automatically all books from all 5*-autor are marked blue and the related value is set in a colum.

I like it.

Sorry for necroing, chaley, but I'm playing around with the user categories at the moment.

The drag&drop of the book-ID into a user category doesn't work for me, similar problem as here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...66&postcount=1

An item (column) can be put into a user category only if it is/can be shown in the tag browser, which is not possible with the builtin ID column. If you want IDs in user categories then you must create a composite column with "Show in tag browser" checked. The template is {id}, sort/search by is Number. You can drag&drop this column into a user category.

The User Category optional plugin facilitates adding/removing of built-in category values (Author, Series, Tags, Publisher, Languages) to a User category from within the book list… best used from the book list context menu.
