User Categories and hierarchies

What I've always wanted to ask.

I have a user category for authors to summarise the pseudonyms and the structure is ‘Pseudo.Joe Public’.


Why is in the settings under Tagbrowser --> Hierarchy and Settings each entry for the category Pseudo listed individually and not just Pseudo?


I hope I have expressed myself clearly.

User categories are always hierarchical. This can't be turned off.

Having them in the Hierarchy dialog serves no purpose. I've removed them from it.

I would like to have only one entry "Pseudo", like the other hierarchical items.
I just find the current solution visually ugly and a bit messy.

But as I said, there is no point in having "Pseudo" in that list. User categories are always hierarchical. You can neither turn it on nor turn it off. Why put it in the list if you can't do anything to it?

With the next release, no user category will appear in that list.

I'm very fine with that. But what's with the other tabs, Partioning & Collapsing and especially Display, removing from them too?

You didn't ask about the partitioning and display dialogs.

I changed these dialogs to show only the user category prefix, which is the part in front of any dot. I also changed the tag browser context menus to do the same thing. The goal is to make user categories behave more like normal categories for partitioning and display. The changes are now in calibre source.

These changes aren't risk free because they touch complicated parts of the code. I would appreciate anyone who uses user categories and runs from source (or can run from source) to try displaying & hiding categories as well as changing their partitioning scheme. Finding problems before the release is a good thing.

I don't know if Kovid will make a preview or a release this Friday. Depends on what is in it and how important he thinks the changes are. He has done a lot with reading aloud and voices, which might push him either way. We will see.
