how to set a bookshop? (FW 5.20)

Has anyone a clue about how to set the default bookshop on an old reader, short of asking PB support to do it as hinted here? (and perhaps getting the answer that they won't)
The reason I'm asking is because I'd like to try to set up a pbcloud space, after I can no more log in into dropbox.
As my reader came, if I tap on Bookshop on the main screen, or on Settings/Synchronization/Pocketbook Cloud/Login, what I get is that the browser opens up on www.google.de
I have already found that my /ebrmain/config/device.cfg has in its first line "bookstore_url=", but even after having written after the = the address of a shop where I created an ad hoc account, the result remains the same for me, even after reboot.

I found also an url=http://www.google.de in /mnt/secure/device.cfg, but even after changing that to the bookshop url I don't see a difference.

... and even after having edited to the same extent the corresponding .gen files in /ebrmain/config/, I still find that after reboot /var/run/config/device.cfg contains

url=http://www.google.de

Maybe that url is uncompressed at every boot from an image file?

I don't think that. Since I'm not using those Online features can't really help with that but I'm quite sure, the secret lies in mnt/secure/device.cfg

Look deeper into Storename, if I remember it correctly there was a file in the openly accesable mnt/ext1/system space, which had the integrated storenames linked to urls.

There is /mnt/ext1/system/bookstore.cfg containing

url=none://hide.obreey.sync

I had already tried to change it to the http:// of the random store I created an account on, but it didn't help.
/mnt/ext1/system/config/browser.cfg also contains several zoom factors for different bookstore websites, which I guess is post facto.

If you're finding that changes to a .cfg file revert after a reboot, try changing the value in both the .cfg and corresponding .cfg.back file, then try rebooting.

Well, right. So the farthest I've got by now is by setting the url in both /mnt/secure/device.cfg and /mnt/secure/device.cfg.back. I tried with the url of the homepage of the bookshop I chose, and I landed there when tapping on Store on the main screen. The browser opens without the url entry box, in contrast with the normal opening of the browser app.

I then wrote in

url=https://cloud.pocketbook.digital/browser/en/user/NNNNNNN/

, and this way I get a view of my pbcloud space. Some cookie logs me in automatically, and the behavior is persistent after reboot.

Other attempts I did of setting this url in /ebrmain/config/device.cfg, /ebrmain/config/device.cfg.gen or even creating a new /mnt/ext1/system/device.cfg lead to no effect, as if the setting is ignored there.

If in Settings/sync/pbcloud I tap on Login, I land on the same page. This however is not good enough for telling my device that the association is done, and syncing on tap with the cloud.
