Calibre will not install

Hi Kovid, the latest version of Calibre will not install. It should have installed over the previous version on my D drive. I get the message:

Out of disk space
Volume Disk Size Available Required
C: 99GB 455MB 719MB
D: 931GB 602GB 0KB

You will see that I have plenty of room on the D drive.

How can I persuade the MSI to use D instead of C for the install?

Cheers

Paddy

I'm going to assume that you are installed the installed calibre not the portable calibre. To change the install directory, open the calibre installer. On the first page where you see the accept the license terms, check that box and then click on the Advanced button. Change the install directory to D:\Program Files\Calibre2\ (you may have to create the Program Files directory on your D: drive first). Click next and then click install. See the attached images.

If your previous install on your D: drive was the calibre portable installer, this is unlikely to carry over all your settings but will leave that for the calibre gurus to answer.

EDIT: Tested this installing on a Windows VM and once I installed to the D: drive, the next install automatically defaulted to that drive so that suggests that you installed the portable version on your D: drive.

I pointed it via Advanced to D:\Program Files\Calibre2\
Sorry, still get same error message: Out of Disk space Volume C: Req 155,196KB Available 96,576KB FRee some space and retry.
I had not installed Portable but have now, in order to continue using Calibre for daily newspaper download.

I would agree with @theducks, you have less than 100MB of free space on your C: drive and the install temp files need 152MB.

You may want to run Disk Cleanup to see if it frees enough space. Depending on which web browser you are using, you may also try cleaning up the cache to free up some space. A quick check would be to delete the contents of C:\Windows\Temp (the system temp directory) and C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp (the user temp directory).

To save issues in the future, change the Temp/Tmp directory locations. First create 2 directories on your D: drive. Call one of them SystemTmp and the other UserTmp. Type env into the search box and then click on the Environmental Variables button. Change the TEMP and TMP entries in the User variables box to D:\UserTmp and the TEMP and TMP variables in the System variables box to D:\SystemTmp. Click on OK and then restart your system.

Thanks guys for that support and vital information. Yes my User Temp files were numerous and large, but deleting them still only gave 168 Mb. So plan B to change the system variable looks like my best option (and not just for Calibre install), will tackle it over the weekend when I can concentrate, and report back here. Thanks again, very much appreciated!

Have you ever run (windows) Disk Cleanup? There are other disk space hogs.
(browser cache, update backup from way back)

@DNSB - FYI: calibre Windows Portable always asks for location, if you want to update an existing install you select its location; you'll be asked to confirm you want to update that install.

Has to be this way because one can have multiple calibre Windows Portable installs; viz:

So often, the person with an issue never posts the feedback so it's great to hear back that we were able to help you.
