Calibre Portable ver 5.x not opening on Window 7

Does anyone know (has anyone found) the solution to this?

If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, please use calibre 3.48, which works with all Windows 7/Vista machines, from here. Simply un-install calibre and install 3.48, doing so will not affect your books/settings.

Oh, I see. I downloaded from here. I think in this case there should be some kind of warning then, but there's none.

BTW it does run in safe mode.

The advice (notes) is on the main download page, you may have just bypassed those.

That probably means that a 3rd party program that is run at startup is preventing calibre from running; likely candidates include anti-malware, shell extensions, etc.

To determine which one, use a process of elimination (e.g a binary chop) via Task Manager's->Startup->Disable function.

Oh, and have look at the FAQ, there are several 3rd party programs that are known cause problems if run with calibre ==>> Frequently Asked Questions

The only way you can update calibre is to update your system to Windows 10 64-bit. But that basically means starting over providing your system can handle Windows 10.

Or a number of other 64 bit x86-64 based OSes, including but not limited to Win11. Not easily MacOS (Hackintosh).
Allegedly Linux MX can install as a file on any Windows using NTFS. An additional Linux install (via 2nd drive or repartition) can also read NTFS files.

But the OP machine might be unsuitable for Win64.

It's a lot easier to run Windows 10. If the computer can't do that, it won't be able to run MacOS.

There is one suggestion. Use the environment variable to disable the GPU.
