There is no version of calibre for Chromebooks. You need to enable Linux and then install calibre as a Linux app. I take it you have tried to follow such guides as How-to: Installing Calibre E-book manager on a Chromebook?

Also make sure you know if an ARM or an x86-64 type of CPU in the Chromebook as those use different software. The ARM versions are more tricky.

While it's possible to use a Chromebook as a Linux laptop, it's only worth considering if you are otherwise mainly wanting a Chromebook. A cheap Lenovo sold with no OS is a better route for a Linux laptop.

Also often with ARM you may need to compile from source.

The Chromebooks are simple to use and cheap "real" computers replacing laptops and tablets for many home users.

However I'd kind of agree with the sentiment. They are for gmail, Google docs and web browsing. Something with more storage and a better screen is needed for content creation & management, but then it costs more.

I have to agree. By a computer for HOW YOU are going to use it.
Basic stuff like email and browsing,,, Perfect.

Things like Photo editing and Calibre that need heavier lifting, Get a full PC with real LOCAL STORAGE.

Cheap does not mean good. In this case, you'll get another computer and the Chromebook will go into the closet to sit and rot.

Return it, get your money back and use that money towards a real computer.
