Separating genres from subjects/topics
Do other people separate genres/book-types (e.g. 'science fiction', 'biographies & memoirs', 'cozy mysteries') from subjects/topics (e.g. 'cats', 'health & wellness', 'atlantic canada'), or keep them mixed together?

I only do genres, not topics. That's because 99% of my ebooks are fiction. No point in separating a handful of nonfiction ebooks into topics. If I had more nonfiction, I'd create topics as subcategories of my nonfiction genre.

Nope:
Tags are how I select. But I really thin the supplied tags. 'fiction' is only part of Science Fiction (my library is 95% fiction) I use hierarchical tagging: Science Fiction.Military Mystery.Cozy Almost no tags with &. Those get corrected to the actual or broken into 2 tags I feel no need to break Fantasy down by critter Same goes for Mystery Sleuths by gender. |

I use tags for everything. So genres are just another tag to me.

Here's what I did:
The genres are second-level tags under Fiction, e.g. Fiction.Science Fiction Fiction.Mystery But the topics and subjects go under Fiction.Topics.Whatever, e.g. Fiction.Topics.World War II.Holocaust Fiction.Topics.Survival It works well for the fiction at least. |
