Order multi-series storyline in reading order
I'm sure this must have been asked before but I can't figure out the right search words. I'll go straight to an example of what I want to do.
Ramond E Feist has a ton of books in an overall storyline called "Riftwar Cycle". He has several series within the world of the Riftwar. So my Kobo can show me these different series and the order of books in the individual series. Great, but how do I know which series is next? I can put all the Riftwar books in a collection but I still won't know which series to read next. I will either have to look online to determine the next series, or I've sometimes created a "reading order" ebook for these "multi-series series". I'm setting up a new collections column in calibre to create the collections on my kobo. Should I just create another kind of column for reading order that I can at least see in Calibre? Or does it make sense to rename the series with a numbered prefix (see example below)? What's the best or recommended way to organize this? (title/series/number/collection) Magician /01 The Riftwar Saga/01/Riftwar Cycle Silverthorn /01 The Riftwar Saga/02/Riftwar Cycle A Darkness at Sethanon/01 The Riftwar Saga/03/Riftwar Cycle Daughter of the Empire/02 The Empire Trilogy/01/Riftwar Cycle Servant of the Empire/02 The Empire Trilogy/02/Riftwar Cycle etc |

I think both of your ideas can work.
If you rename the series and put their position within the overall cycle at the start of the series name ([01 The Riftwar Saga, 02 The Empire Trilogy, etc), and then you create a collection "Riftwar Cycle", you can sort your collection by "Series" and you will get the right order. Or you can create another column and put the reading order there, and then use the subtitle to transfer the information on your Kobo. Personally, I like the first solution more. |

For Feist, I would just put all the books in a single series... Riftware is pretty straightforward throughout. It gets trickier for series that are distinct but parallel, and intersect at different points in their respective order. For example, F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack and Adversary Cycle series, which share 2 books at different points in their respective order.
