tapping on superscript numbers don't work in a certain book, but works in android
In my Kobo Forma, when I'm reading a certain book*, I tap on some hyperlink superscript that should take me to the footnote/endnote, but nothing happens.
When I'm reading the same book on my Android, with the Moon reader app, the note pops up. I have this problem both with an unpatched Kobo forma and when I patch it. (*Note to self: RobRey's SysTh 2nd ed) Last edited by droopy; 02-12-2023 at 02:18 PM. |

May be You are using a epub and not a Kepub. The touch area in the reader of epub is too little so it is difficult to center it. Try to convert Your book in a Kepub with calibre or kepubify and it should work.

hi ps67,
i connected my computer and just checked the file on my kobo forma. Its file extension is "kepub.epub". When I click on the note number in the computer, it succesfully opens up the pop-up note. I disconnected the kobo forma from the laptop. I then opened the same book in the Kobo Forma itself. I tapped the same "note number" with my finger and it will not open. I know I am tapping the number because the Forma momentarily changes the number 1 from black text & white background .. to white "1" text and black box/background. So I know I'm tapping the right point. The question remains: Why won't the note pop up for any of the notes in this book? |

Here's a video showing that the tap is at the right spot:
https://i.imgur.com/lG2Y9Dm.mp4 I've also uploaded the movie file in a zip file. It should show up as an attachment to this comment of mine. Last edited by droopy; 02-12-2023 at 06:12 PM. |

I convert superscript links so it's not superscript and add the whole word to the link.
It's stupid to slavishly copy paper print design in ebooks. You'll find they work if the font is made bigger. |

Dear quoth,
Though I have written ”superscript”, they really aren't in this book. also did you watch the video? I made the text size crazy big --so big that there's only like 20 words per screen. It still doesn't work |

The table of contents has entire lines of linked chapters, and not just a number. Yet when I tap on them, I'm not transported from the Table of Contents to the tapped chapter. I'm still at the Table of Contents.
What is wrong? Again, it's only on my Kobo Forma. |

I convert superscipt links to non footnote links. So if it's a 1 in superscript, I'll convert it to be [01] without superscript. That way it's easy to tap.
Superscripting a single character for the link anchor is a really stupid way to do it for eBooks. |

Kobo's just don't handle footnotes right. It's not a matter of formatting, I've reported this to Kobo via an email (I'd suggest you do that, too). I've also reported it in their github repository (and even though I do talk about <aside>, I also talk about ANY kind of footnote method working or not working as the mood takes the reader):
https://github.com/kobolabs/epub-spec/issues/59 and here in the firmware request thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=2100 But, since Kobo doesn't seem to care, we'll probably never see a fix. Last edited by enuddleyarbl; 02-13-2023 at 02:56 PM. |

If the linked text is too large a paragraph it won't popup, but you should still jump to it from the link. Each footnote should have a link back to the source and thus be entered more than once if more than one place needs the note. They are best also at the end of each chapter for ereaders with no hyperlinks, rather than all together in a sort of appendix, but you can duplicate the text for an appendix.
Some publishers/formatters make too many assumptions about how stuff works. |

Hi DNSB (David)
Here's the book, all scrambled. UPDATE: I'm keeping this file up for historical purpose. But in the next comment, I uploaded the same book, from a better source. I still have the same problem that prompted this post. Last edited by droopy; 02-15-2023 at 12:43 AM. |

Hi DNSB (David),
Here's the book, but a better source. Tapping on links with this version in my Kobo Forma now work. Last edited by droopy; 02-15-2023 at 05:37 AM. |
