ver 6.8 book details has big change?

installed latest release 6.8. Running on laptop, win 10. The user interface is calibre style and layout is narrow.

The book details show a drastic change. I have been using calibre since 2010 and have upgraded regularly. This is the first time I have had such a big change. The book cover now occupies 2/3 of the the width and the details (author, title, description, etc) has only 1/3 of the width. How do I get this changed back?

There are four .... across the top and again to the right margin, don't know it that means anything. I tried replacing the template with any earlier version I had saved but it didn't help. Old person, simple explanation please. Thank you to anyone who can help.

The horizontal splitter has always been there in Narrow layout, but it was very hard to see in Light mode. The vertical splitter (between cover and columns) is new.

Yes, I requested a pane splitter so I could pull it up and hide the covers when in grid/cover browser mode.

Very useful addition, thanks for suggesting it.
I wouldn't usually choose to have the cover show in book details pane, because it took a lot of screen real estate - unless narrowing down the entire pane size to the right.

Just ran 6.5 portable to test other things (i'm experiencing some metadata update lag, when changing custom fields, mostly...) so I took a pic for comparison:

actually, updating any field in the MDE dialog, like adding a tag, results in a 10 sec. lag before Calibre will be ready

for instance: I got many books from Project Gutenberg today, but they don't have any "Project Gutenberg" identifier or tag... so if I edit meta for one book (or if bulk editing, doesn't matter), and enter a new tag "project gutenberg", I get that lag.

Not sure if this was happening before 6.8, however I only noticed today

Just discovered - in 6.8 I somehow lost the Fit cover within view setting in the Detached Book Details panel -- drove me nuts for a minute or two.

I used to have that happen because of a rather poorly-written composite column. I think I just ended up converting it to a non-composite column.

The single-field edit in Action Chains has the option to populate a column from a template. Less of a performance impact than a composite column in exchange for a slight increase of the db size. You'll also need to re-run it to update the column values, so it's most useful for when the values don't change too much.

Depending on what the composite does, you might find that using a Python template gets rid of the problem. They can be 1 to 2 orders of magitude faster, especially when processing lists and especially identifiers.

Hard to see? Never have I once thought the borders were hard to see. Now it doesn't look as good as it did.

Which UI style are you using? The changelog specifically mentions Calibre style.

EDIT: Stupid brain is slow -- you mentioned it looks worse, which implies you noticed the change and are on Calibre style.

Thanks for all suggestions, all running fast and smoothly now! yay

I deleted the"VLs" composite, then restarted... tested (it wasn't the culprit). Then deleted some other composites which I use mostly as aliases for other columns... again restarted and tested... nothing. Did this process three times I think.

Now when I add the tags, even in bulk, they get added quite instantly, and Calibre too refreshes in less than a sec.

Now to find the culprit, I'm doing things very carefully.

Yes, I am on the Calibre style and yes, it does look not as good as it used to look. I;ve never ever seen a need for such a change and I've been with Calibre since LibPRS500.

Why was this suggested as a needed change? It's just not nice.
