Haven't used calibre in a while. I didn't have issues with metadata download before. I disabled firewall, antivirus. Not using a VPN. Using amazon, US, Amazon servers. Update calibre and you will be fine. If you cant do that, then I have made a change to that metadata source that should fix it, however, it will only work correctly if the metadata is all english characters.

Given that you are running Windows 10, if it's 64-bit, I suggest trying Calibre 5.44 or 6.1.

I am just now running into the same problem. Running v3.48 on Windows 7. It worked fine first thing this morning then suddenly I get an error message when trying to download metadata. Error message below.
calibre, version 3.48.0 ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download any covers, click "Show details" for details. You really should update calibre, metadata download cannot keep working indefinitely with ancient versions. That said I have fixed this particular error.

I would love to update it and I kept updating it until it kept crashing on Win7 at which point I had to roll it back. Once this computer goes I'll get one with Win 11 and keep it updated. I love your program and would never be without it. Thanks for the great program! And for the reply!
ETA: I just checked it and it's working perfectly again. Thanks so much. Last edited by Ellie; 07-18-2022 at 07:00 AM. Reason: added to post |

Hi, I hate to trouble you with the same sort of issue, but. . . running Windows 7 (getting a new laptop soon) and was running Calibre 4.16.0 with no problems, used it every day for a project of mine and then yesterday, got the following error.
calibre, version 4.16.0 ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download metadata. Click Show Details to see details Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\utils\ipc\simple_worker.py", line 308, in main File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\worker.py ", line 103, in single_identify File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\update.py ", line 85, in patch_plugins File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\update.py ", line 41, in load_plugin File "<string>", line 24, in <module> ImportError: cannot import name random_common_chrome_user_agent Based on the advice in this forum, uninstalled this version and installed 3.48, but still getting the same sort of error. calibre, version 3.48.0 ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download metadata. Click Show Details to see details Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\utils\ipc\simple_worker.py", line 290, in main File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\worker.py ", line 103, in single_identify File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\update.py ", line 85, in patch_plugins File "site-packages\calibre\ebooks\metadata\sources\update.py ", line 41, in load_plugin File "<string>", line 24, in <module> ImportError: cannot import name random_common_chrome_user_agent Other than uninstall the newer Calibre and install the older version for Windows 7 in an attempt to get Calibre to download metadata again, I did not install or delete anything on my machine. Thanks so much for any assistance you can offer. Calibre is critical to my project and really cannot spare the time waiting for my new laptop. Also, apologizing in advance if I'm posting wrong as I am super shy online and rarely reach out for help. |

@annyn, given that you can run Calibre 4.16, I suggest you try Calibre 4.23 and see if that works any better. That is the last version 4 release.
