Problem with duplicates on add

I'm also having incorrect "dups". I bought a 3 book package from Amazon on Mrs. Parqett; "A nice class of corpse". Problem is 2 books have the same title; I slightly changed the title of book 3.

I am trying to add from my win 11 laptop with Calibre loaded & has the same library name as the desktop. I keep getting "duplicate" on the laptop! so what else is being compared? & what is the max length on the title comparison?

Oh, I have the book 1 that has about the same title prior loaded but there is a slight difference as the 'g' in gripping in lower case instead of upper case in the books from the package.

I got my library fixed! BUT there is a bug(?) in 5.44 & others?

I found on the preferences under 'add books' that the title is using the metadata for title comparisons & removing the 'tick' doesn't get anything; there is a script that should have tried to get/use the metadata for the book.

How soon does the metadata of a removed book get updated as I had changed the title completely at the source (desktop Calibrary Library)? Tried restart but still dup results even tho the books have been removed.

Somehow got the book forced added onto the laptop (win11 home) & then edited the title to show like the book cover.

Then tried the Surface Go 2 tablet with win 11 pro. Same procedure in removing the books then adding the desktop books with the new titles. Here on win 11 pro, I get dups but with error showing 2 titles of the same removed book; the dialogue is different from the win 11 home as it options to 'select all' which I did; & the book got added after which I edited the book with the new title. Much easier with win 11 pro???

Problem solved but still something wrong with the metadata update timing? Just exit from the library & opening is not doing a 'restart'? Need to do a computer restart?

I dont know what you are saying. The title is used, and metadata updates are instant. If you change the metadata of a book, future add operations will compare the title of the incoming book to the updated title in the database.

I had changed the book title in the 'edit metadata' of Calibre on the desktop & also did the '>' to the other side of the dialogue.

When adding the book from the Calibre laptop or tablet, the source of the add is from the desktop Calibre Library directory which has the new name of the book.

If the metadata was changed then I would not have gotten the dup msg refering to the OLD name. If the change was immediate, then the comparison would be with the new name on the desktop Calibre as the OLD name would have been replaced.

Unless win 11 "wrote", but still in the cache. My new desktop computer has 32 gig of ram so lots of space for caches(?).

I cannot replicate your symptoms. Pressing next in the edit metadata dialog after editing the title updates the book list, and the filenames on the filesystem and the database immediately.

I guess my meta database got messed up but believe it is 'fixed' now; do need to tell the whole story regarding what happened prior to the adding of the books.

1. I bought the 'dup' book in May with the title that had the description as part of the title & which was the 'vol 1' according to the book cover; left the description as is.

2. Saw the author's book on sale in the 'deals' forum; Amazon had a package of 4 volumes so bought it but Amazon saw that I already had the 1st vol & sent 3 vols for the package. 2 of the 3 vols had the same title with description as the vol 1 purchased in May.

3. Got dups msg when adding vols 2 & 3; thought the dup msg was for vol 2 & 3. So when changing the titles & still got 'dup's.

4. Then changed the title of the 1st vol gotten previously in May; which I thought should 'fix' my metadatas.

5. Am thinking that my 'dup' msg was refering to the title of vol 1 & that having 3 dups messed things up; now should pay more attention when adding books!

Hope this clarifies the situation & don't think trying to duplicate what happened would be easy. For curiousity, is there a way I am able to view the database to see the stuff of the related books?

Search for SQLite Utilities. Suggest you use them on copy of the library database - most can write as well as read.

I use "DB Browser for SQLite".
