I have a suggestion

Hello
Indeed, I have a suggestion. Can I write it here down? (thanks to move it if necessary)

There is a feature that does not exist yet and, imho, it would be pretty useful.

When one makes a conversion (for instance: epub to pdf), we should have an option : KEEP THE ORIGINAL FILENAME. (Or does it exist already? Haven't seen it...)

Example:
I recently converted 100+ Georges Simenon (yep, the Belgian writer) from epub to pdf.
I had 19 different formats!!! ...none of them what I wanted (what i want is: Name First-name Publication-date [Series Series-#] Title).
For instance:
Simenon Georges 1942 La veuve Couderc.pdf
(or
Simenon Georges 1947 Maigret 046 La pipe de Maigret.pdf)
I don't know exactly where Calibre takes the filename to create the pdf file, obviously not from metadata (I checked). Probably from somewhere in the epub file.
Right now, I do that manually and it's frustrating.

Of course, this feature should work for all kinds of conversions...

Thanks in advance.

If you're talking about the name in the calibre library folder, don't look there. Treat it as a black box.

When you send the book to a device or export it, then there are templates you can configure to control the filename.

Sorry! I'm not at a PC so I can't walk you through menus but do take a look at https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/ especially https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/template_lang.html which describes templates.

While you don't want to touch anything in the library folder, you can use GetFileName to automatically import the original filename to a column. This can then be used in the save template.

ah, somehow, i could install a new column that shows the filename, good!

now the question is still:
when i convert (for instance) an EPUB file into a PDF file, how can i save it using the original filename?!

thanks in advance

Sounds to me that you don't actually want to use calibre's library but instead use the command line tool ebook-convert. With that you specify the input file and output file by name.

You can't specify the output file name when you convert using the GUI. Subsequent to conversion you can do a save to disk to copy the file wherever you want. Save to disk supports name templates so you could use that original file name column.

@chaley, thanks for your comments

first, my messages were about "improving" calibre with a new feature (see my very first post over here), especially because of the simenon examples ...if it does not exist yet

my point is, now i've got a column "filename" and it would be very useful to have a field "use the filename" in the conversion tool, no?!

(therefore i'm not sure to understand now what is the real use of the addon i installed... just to see the filename?!)

i will see what this "command line tool ebook convert" is..................

No. The conversion is "convert a book that is in the library and the result to the library". That means the file name of the converted book is controlled by calibre in the same way as all other books in the library.

You said you want to use the file name at some later point. Calibre does not retrain it but that plugin will. At the point you need the file name, such as when doing a save-to-disc, the template that generates the file name can use it.
