Missing My Notebook Icon
Is there a way to use My Notebook app on my Aura One with latest firmware 4.32.19501? I don't see the icon on home screen... I can run SketchPad from beta feature and I thing there must be a way to run also My Notebook somehow...

Not certain if this will work but on the Sage and Elipsa, adding StylusUsageDetected=false under [ApplicationPreferences] in the Kobo eReader.conf file will disable the My Notebooks icon. This suggests that it is possible that adding StylusUsageDetected=true under that heading will enable the My Notebooks icon even on devices that lack the stylus.

Notebooks only work on the Sage & Elipsa and only with the special Kobo stylus. Even if the notebook icon was on other Kobos it would only let you create and delete notebooks. Even the basic one isn't the same as the Sketchpad, though it's similar and frankly pointless compared to Advanced Notebook.
A dumb stylus or BT keyboard or finger doesn't work in Notebooks except to navigate or use the menu. |

It's also doubtful that handwriting recognition is going to function on Kobo's devices other than the Sage and Elipsa.

I don't even think the software needed to run the notebook features (I think the foxit viewer is one of them) are installed on older devices.
You might be able to get away with installing the KoboRoot.tgz file from the Sage firmware, but a) it'll eat up a lot more disk space in the /root partition to the point where random things may break because of the lack of free space, b) you won't be able to roll back without a factory reset (just deleting the different files won't be enough because DBUS changes are made to use the foxit software rather than the Adobe stuff), c) I still don't think those binaries would run, and d) even if it did work, you'd have to remember to update with the Sage software but Aura One kernel for every firmware update until the end of time. Not doing so might screw things up. Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Last edited by rtiangha; 05-02-2022 at 05:14 PM. |

Thank you for answers. I try to add StylusUsageDetected=true, but it doesn't work for my Aura One. I find out there is also StylusEnabled=true in [PowerOptions], but without any effect.
It's true that Aura One doesn't support styluses wit MPP protocol, but for hand writing notes you don't need it (you can just write a note like in Sketch Pad). You can use one of the cheap active capacitive touch screen pens without MPP or AES protocol for writing. I think it is just a matter of software. Maybe there will be some stylus driver bridge for older devices to support this feature... |

Ok than. Is there some other ways to make hadwrited notes on Aura One? Maybe I can use some third party software (but I don't see this functionality in KOreader and Plato...)?

https://www.amazon.com/RENAISSER-Sen...st_sto_dp&th=1
There appears to be a newer "Soft Tail & Barrel Dual Eraser" version. I have no idea if it is compatible, but I would expect it to be since it too is designed for use with the Surface Pro: https://www.amazon.com/RENAISSER-Sen...dp_ob_title_ce It's reported the OEM Surface stylus works and one other, the name of which I 've forgotten. |

Also currently only the Sage and Elipsa have the matching electronics. The Kobo stylus (or compatible) certainly does nothing on a Libra or H20. So not point in enabling Notebook icon on anything but an Elipsa or Sage. It can't be added by FW, it would need new Kobo models. Dumb stylus: €2 Kobo stylus: €40 inc VAT approx. Apple Pencil in Limerick City: €130 inc VAT. I looked at styluses on Amazon, but it wasn't clear any would be compatible or 100% compatible. The Elipsa comes with a stylus so I didn't risk buying a 3rd party for a Sage. Note there are two kinds of dumb stylus, basically one pointy kind can work resistive & Nintendo screens and the other one simulates a finger for capacitative touch (invented 20 years before iPhone but not used due to low resolution). There are several kinds of digitiser stylus. The original Wacom one needs no battery as the digitiser slate powers it, it does have electronics. Some need batteries. Some can use a layer behind the screen. All true digitiser styluses need an active layer. Resistive is not as good as a true digitiser, but far higher resolution than capacitive. Only a true digitiser stylus can have pressure sensing and buttons that work properly. |

Not sure why you would by the Renaissance stylus as it's rechargeable and about the same price as the Kobo. It will go flat. The AAAA in the Kobo stylus lasts about 6 months and a spare one has a 5 to 10 year shelf life. They can be bought singly at about €1 or you can get 6 out of certain 6LR23 9V packs (under €3, so 50c each). The spud on the cell in the 9V pack is the -Ve terminal, so goes in the other way to a labelled AAAA cell.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/RENAISSER-S.../dp/B0987J23K1 vs 100% compatible actual Kobo https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09HSPQFS9 The rechargeable cell will have a fraction of run time and self discharge. Similarly, I never use rechargeable cells in smoke alarms, electret microphones, digital test meters (DVM/DMM) and other low consumption or intermittent use gadgets. Alkaline cells. Silver Oxide better for buttons, though larger calculator ones can be Alkaline and single use Lithium for coin cells (about twice the volts per cell anyway). |

I have never liked the Kobo stylus which was included with my Elipsa. For one, its barrel is too large (I'm female, slender hands, long fingers), the Renaisser is a bit slimmer. It is also slightly lighter and nib use is smoother than the Kobo. I hate dealing with replaceable batteries. I've had the Raphael for six months and have charged it only two or three times. It's used frequently, though not every day. The quality is excellent, the button for highlighting/erasure is a better design and easier to use, for me. How it feels and functions in my hand is the priority, power source is not. I have zero interest in scientific/technical specifications as related to a stylus battery. Good grief. The Raphael is a win-win for me. |

This is 1/2 the price.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adrawpen-Re.../dp/B09G5R9YJZ I'd not recommend it as there is no assurance about quality or compatibility. The Kobo stylus is fine in my tiny hands and less diameter than many ink pens or art markers or brushes. Obviously you can buy & use whatever you want, but for this type of application the rechargeable solution and zero assurance of how compatible it is at the similar price isn't an educated recommendation. I've designed this sort of stuff for a living and had an electronic pen patent. It's for a Microsoft surface. Personally if I need a replacement or a second stylus so as the Sage & Elipsa can be used by two people here I'd buy the Kobo one. If a much cheaper one is actually advertised as Sage or Elipsa compatible I'd consider it. But I'd recommend people should be wary of buying 3rd party stuff at the same price as official with NO mention of compatibility. You've just been lucky and the replaceable cell in this is not like a battery for a torch or toy car. The rechargeable cell does a fixed number of cycles. It it even replaceable? |
