Kobo ClaraHD turned off watermark

Hi everyone,

First of all, sorry if what I'm about to ask is answered somewhere here, but I couldn't find a solution for my problem.

I just offered my SO a Kobo Clara HD and we're facing an issue with the off screen, where it shows a watermark of the retailer I bought the device from (Fnac). Our issues are that this must be unnecessarily consuming some amount of battery, since the screen isn't completely turned off, and it's free advertising on something she owns, which also doesn't sit well with us.

Is there a way to remove this? Would a firmware update fix this feature or is this locked to the device? Can I reinstall the entire thing with vanilla OS?

Current software version is: 4.21.15023

No, this isn't using any power. E-ink screens only use power when they are being updated. After that, they just retain whatever was last written on them until the next update. It is one of the reasons they are so good for a low-powered device such as an ereader.

But, displaying the FNAC logo can be turned off. FNAC is an affiliate of Kobo and when the affiliate on the device is set to FNAC, some options, including the screensaver options, are not available. If you want to change this, edit the file "affiliate.conf" and change the value of the affiliate to "Kobo". After that, the screensaver options will be avialable.

Eink screen only consumes battery on refresh, so don't worry.

If you want to remove affiate logo you can do it this way:
just open the kobo "affiliate.conf" file (in the .kobo folder) with a text editor and replace :

affiliate=fnac

with

affiliate=Kobo

I was able to remove the Fnac logo and now just says "Turned off", which is better.

Was hoping I could have a custom text but it didn't work, so I guess that's asking a lot.

You might want to check under Settings (tap More on the bottom of the home screen and then Settings). Tap on Energy saving and privacy and under Sleep and Power Off, check Show current read. You can also select Show book covers full screen, etc.

And if you use your Kobo often, there's no point in turning the device completely off; just put it to sleep.
