Resize the Cover or files box in 'Edit metadata layout'

I prefer using the all on 1 Tab for easy access to the custom metadata. However the size of the cover is reduced & the files box taking up half the height of the window.

In Default view the cover height is at least 80% of the height & the files section 20%

Is there a way to resize either. My goal is to see a larger cover to read from while editing individual metadata. Please

In the default view, the file window is much smaller & the cob=ver is much bigger.

@chaley would need to confirm this since he designed this view, but I believe the vertical space for the cover is based on the number of metadata fields, the more you have the more space it takes. The third "column" isnt really an independent column with the cover and comments having their own sizes.

I had previously limited the number of custom columns to fit the space, on mine a scroll bar appears, similar to your screenshot and doesn't affect the width of any other section.

The dialog is laid out as follows:
  • Each column in that view consumes approximately 1/3 of the dialog's width. It is "approximately" because the minimum sizes of various widgets can change the widths.
  • The minimum height of the first row of 3 columns, which contains the basic metadata, custom metadata, and the cover boxes; is the height of the basic metadata box.
  • The comments box has a maximum height that depends on button sizes and fonts.
  • The height of the first row grows once the comments box has expanded to its maximum height.
  • The cover is displayed in the resulting box preserving the aspect ratio.
It is the "height of cover box == height of first row" that is causing the problem. I changed the dialog to remove that restriction by turning the third column into a single pane ignoring rows. The cover box consumes as much height in that pane as the formats box permits, usually giving the cover more vertical space. See the attachment. Whether this improves things for the OP depends on the monitor height and the cover aspect ratios.

This behaves a bit odd. If yo resize the windows HEIGHT, The lower part grows first. There are scroll bars (if needed) on the custom metadata side.

Once the Height gets past some magic point, the upper half grows (cover gets bigger and the scroll bars can go away when not needed. There is no user proportioning.

I guess we were both expecting it to behave more like the Main GUI, where you can drag the line between the Details and the main section.

More to the OP. This was just my observation on how my installation behaves.

Somewhat

I see the Comments box in MDE AIO has a single row of buttons.

The free standing HTML long text editor always has three rows of buttons, no matter what, which is visually unappealing, viz:

It would be nice if, width permitting, it only had one row of buttons.

A couple of things I tried were.
  • I resized the window height beyond the monitor to see how it would react. The 2nd custom column was the only box that changed, The cover only slightly.
  • I resized the width to pass into the second monitor. I also note that it only let me drag the size minimally height wise before reaching maximum however let me go full width of 2 monitors width.
My formats box on my end could be the issue, the size when in default view is vastly smaller. When in All on 1 tab it takes up half the screen height.

Yes, this is what happens today, before I made the changes. Today the basic metadata box (row 1) sets the size of the cover box. The comments box (row 2) adapts to consume the remaining space. The formats box is in row 2 and therefore is the same height as the comments box. As the dialog height increases the comments box takes more space up to a large limit, increasing the size of both the comments and formats boxes and leaving the size of the cover unchanged. Once it hits that limit then row 1 begins to expand.

The changes, now in calibre source and in the next release, break these links. The formats box is now a fixed height and the cover gets all the vertical space exceeding that height. In most cases this will give the cover more vertical space to be used if the cover aspect ratio permits.
