only 99 tabs possible in one Library

As most subjects I am interested in are somehow related, I prefer to have all my books in one single Calibre Library.
By far the best way to organise my books in a Calibre Library is in my experience using tabs.
However, it is not possible to have more than 99 tabs per Library.
Why exactly this upper limit, and not, say, 999 ?

As far as I know, there is no such limit. You can have any number of virtual libraries. Though unless you have a giant screen, you are not going to be able to display them all as tabs.

I am sorry to say, but both OwnedByCats and KovidGoyal misunderstood me, probably due to my repeated misspelling of «tags» (as «tabs», which would not make much sense anyway). My apologies, it was my mistake.

The number 99 I have mentioned refers not to virtual libraries, but to the (in my experience maximum) number of tags in one single virtual library.

There is no limitation to the number of tags in a virtual library. I am guessing you mean the number of items in a category before it is colapsed in the tag browser. You can control that via Preferences->Look & feel->Tag browser

To be very explicit:
In the past, if I had one single book in a virtual library with the tag (say) «sunshine», and subsequently I deleted that book, then also the tag «sunshine» would automatically disappear.

To remedy this, I have a dummy book with absolutely all tags I already use, and also those I might use in the future (hence getting to the limit of 99 tags for one single book).
This is not an elelgant solution. I would have very much preferred to be able to edit directly the tag list which should be however permanent for the whole library. Then my dummy book would become superfluous.
Alternatively or additionally, if I delete the only book with the tag «sunshine», I'd like to be asked, if that tag whould be also deleted from the tag list, or not.

As far as I know, there is no limit to the number of tags a book can have. So I dont understand your problem.

Where are you seeing a limit of 99 tags in a book/library - I just created a book with a 110 tags, viz:
