Azw
Even when I've downloaded a new book from Amazon, I get the file as an azw, not azw3. What gives? RSVP and Happy Reading.

When you download an eBook direct from Amazon, it comes with a .azw extension be it a Mobi or KF8 format eBook. Once you load it to your Calibre library, Calibre will see what format it is and rename it appropriately. Most eBooks will be in KF8 (AZW3).

My book downloads from amazon for USB transfer have had the azw3 filename extension for KF8 (vast majority) and azw for KF7 (hardly any), including a purchase made last week.

It used to be that the extension was azw on download for USB. Seems to be all azw3 extension since February 2021, some older ones are azw4 without human sensible filenames. No .mobi from Amazon and the azw can be mobi(KF7) or KF8 before Feb 2021. |

Two other possibilities to consider.
1. A book downloaded using a recent version of Kindle for Mac or PC will always have an azw extension regardless of format. 2. Some books are only available in old MOBI format though that is unlikely for a new book. |

I wouldn't really mind the format, because I can convert it to type. However, very big books cannot be converted to azw3 or epub in the Calibre version that I have. Solely due to the number of pages in, say, Complete Dickens.

What OS are you using? Is it a 64-bit OS? If so, is your Calibre 32-bit or 64-bit? What version of Calibre?

One thing you can do to convert KF8 (AZW3) to ePub is to install the KindleUnpack plugin and use to shift the KF8 eBooks to ePub. Then you have to edit it in the Calibre editor to fix any errors. So you also need to have the epubcheck plugin. You check the ePub with the editor's error checker and epubcheck. Then when that's done and the ePub is as you want, you can then side load.

Which version of Windows are you using? 4.23 does have a 64-bit version which should be installed if it's not and then maybe your large conversions may work.
If you are running Windows 7, the recommended suggestion is to upgrade to Windows 10 unless Windows 10 won't work on your hardware. If not, then upgrade to the current version of Calibre 5. |

Sorry for not logging on earlier. I think that we are moving away from the problem I have, which is linked to amazon's setup. Calibre cannot influence that, unless someone corrects me factually. For the record, my laptop came installed with Win 10.
My problem with the azw format is minor. If there is no obvious solution, then so be it. |

How are you obtaining this file? From your Kindle, Download & Transfer from Amazon’s website, Kindle for PC, or something else. Are you getting AZW for all books or one particular book? If one book then what book is it? |
