What happens if I delete all the user categories?
I tried them out a long time ago, found they didn't work for me, forgot about them.

If I try to delete them, I get a warning that "this category contains items". ... So can I delete them without deleting the books in them? I tried to look this up online, but can't find any info about this.

The message is a warning that the user category you are deleting isn't empty -- it contains references to tags, authors, or whatnot. Deleting the category will remove those references. It won't remove the item being referenced.

Deleting a user category doesn't delete books. More generally, deleting anything in the tag browser doesn't delete books.
