Kobo Clara HD randomly ejecting
Hey,
I just got a new laptop (never had a problem with the old one) and now my Kobo Clara is randomly ejecting after being plugged in for a short period of time. Sometimes in the middle of Calibre updating metadata, sometimes when nothing is happening. Anyone else have a problem like this? If so, does anyone know how to fix it? I'm honestly wondering if it's a Windows setting of some kind that was set differently on my old laptop... Maybe something to do with external drives or something? Hopefully someone knows something that will help! |

My Glo HD does something like that with my main laptop. All the other devices are OK, but, it drops off when calibre is looking for books. Plug it into another laptop and it works perfectly. It wasn't always the case. It was my main device before the Clara HD came along. Sometime after that, it stopped working. I assume it is some combination of Windows update and firmware, but, have never bothered to work it out.

check this particular laptops USB ports power manager saved settings...this laptop could be powering off the USB ports after a set time to conserve the laptops battery life. |

I have had an issue with the USB port that can be configured for charging when the laptop is powered down. But, that was with the Aura H2O and a particular cable. I'm not sure what the state of it is as I don't usually use that port for the ereaders. |

I'm on a Windows 10 machine. I found a setting that MIGHT be what I'm looking for - it hasn't ejected like that since, but I've only had it plugged in a few times and it doesn't happen every time.
In control panel I went to 'Devices' then 'USB' and there's a setting that says "Stop devices when screen is off to help save battery. If you're having problems with connected devices, clear the checkbox." I don't know that this will help, since I'm running with the laptop plugged in, not on battery, but we'll see. |

Well, it wasn't that Windows setting, since it ejected on me again earlier tonight. Still not sure what I can do.

I have experienced this problem very recently also (on new Clara and Libra devices) and found the Windows 10 setting below.
Do not know whether this will help always as there are other possibilities:
Why? Because this week suddenly also my external USB drives, which are powered by the USB itself, stopped working. So I suspected that the USB ports somehow could not deliver enough power anymore to make the attached USB mass storage devices work. Note: most BIOSs have a setting to enable the support of USB mass storage devices. It cannot harm to inspect that setting too. Last edited by DrChiper; 06-30-2021 at 04:37 AM. |

Is it ejecting or getting suddenly disconnected If the latter, you could have a usb cable that is wearing out or something.

I think it's ejecting because there's no issues the next time I plug it back in. The 'scan drive for errors' thing doesn't come up.
DrChiper, I looked but there isn't a USB option when I go to advanced power settings. I have only like 4 things listed there and none have a sub-section that is USB related either. Thanks though! |

That opened the same power options list I had been at before... no USB option there.

@DNSB Yes, that's exactly what I did, but USB wasn't an option.
I'm running: Edition Windows 10 Home Version 20H2 Installed on 2021-06-25 OS build 19042.1052 Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.2020.0 Last edited by JDesat; 07-01-2021 at 12:56 AM. Reason: Edit |

I just found another way (hopefully) to do what the power management option I don't have on my computer does. In Device Manager I went to the USB section and in the properties there I could go to 'Power Management' and shut off the 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' option. I'll see if that works.
EDIT: Changing that setting didn't fix the issue... just got ejected again. Last edited by JDesat; 07-01-2021 at 01:07 AM. Reason: Update |
