Latest Kobo driver feature in calibre 5.12

The latest calibre 5.12 does mentioned some unknown (for me that is) new driver feature for Kobo:

Quote:
Kobo driver: Add support for latest firmware and also an option to choose the color used for cover letterboxing
What is exactly meant by this letterboxing color?

When a cover is being displayed at the correct aspect ratio, it does not fill the screen. There is blank space on the left and right side. Now you can set what color that blank space will be instead of just being black.

Ah, enlightening. But also disappointing. I had a wild and mad premonition that Kobo was moving up to some eInk color screen for the forthcoming Kobo Forma 2 ...
Silly me, this should teach me that miracles do not happen (most of the time anyways)

We don't know what's coming out be it a color screen or a Forma replacement. All we know is something is due out from Kobo.

It won't surprise me if one of the next two or three devices has a colour screen, but, that isn't why the option was added. The letterboxing was being done in black. Someone with a white Libra H2O wanted white letterboxing to match the bezel. And I think someone else wanted a grey or something. Adding the colour picker was fairly easy.

I have an update to the Kobo Utilities plugin ready for this as well. One thing you can do with this is use the colour picker to choose a colour from the screen. I found that if I was sending the cover for one book. choosing something from the cover worked well.

I think color isn't still worth to. At 100 DPI, you see pixels of bricks size.

It isn't useful for high quality images. But, it could be useful for the UI and in anywhere that colour can help with understanding but you don't need the highest resolution.

I’m definitely underwhelmed by the actual color screen. But I guess we have to start somewhere. I will stay patient and wait for later generations.
