Screen replacement for Clara HD?

My one month old Clara HD took an undramatic 1 foot spill out of my bag onto a wood floor, and now the corner of the screen is cracked!

Since Kobo doesn't offer any repair service, and a fall like this isn't in warranty, I'm interested in replacing the screen myself. I've looked on aliexpress and ebay for replacement screens for the Clara HD, and I'm not finding any. Does anyone know of any sources for a Clara HD replacement screen?

Also, I'm curious, is the ComfortLight part of the screen? Like, if it were possible to replace the screen with another model's 6" screen, would I lose the ComfortLight?

As you can see, the crack isn't that bad! I might be able to live with it.

Buy another Clara use this one for parts. Suggest you buy extra insurance on the new one.

Kind of a waste to buy insurance on a $130 item. Even with the chance of breakage. These are considered throwaway devices and most people don't keep them more than a couple years. That said I'm surprised it cracked with just a 12 inch drop. I wouldnt buy a second if that happened to me.

Sorry. I hate to see that. I'm guessing you'll either have to replace the whole unit, or wait a while before spare parts start showing up. (I know that's not the news you wanted to hear.) You might see if Kobo would consider allowing you to trade in for a refurbished at a reduced price. (Again, the newness of the Clara is working against you here.)

I would live with it until spare parts show up.

You can also try selling your current and buy a second hand one through Craigslist/the-like.

Maybe get a good case next time?

Rant not directed at OP: It's so strange to see people complain about light-bleeding or dead pixels... Knowing fully well they would live with similar defects in printed books, dog-eared, misprinted, etc. I guess this has to do with the amount they paid for the device, and since it's so much more than any physical book, it somehow justifies their expectation of flawlessness.

I don't own a Clara, so I can only go by what I read, but it's my understanding that this light bleed is something that's relatively easy to fix and would have been relatively easy to avoid had quality control been a bit more rigorous. I can understand the frustration. It's something that could have (and should have) been avoided.

For a few dollars for the insurance they would have replaced the reader. $130 might not be worth insuring to you but to folks on fixed or low income it comes in handi when things go wrong.

Thanks! Yeah, I think I'm going to live with this for now. I've read a bunch in the last day, and I don't even notice it. I just gotta use big page margins!

I'm still deciding whether I'd buy another Clara HD after this. I basically only bought it because of the warm light tone (and because I was interested in getting out of the amazon ecosystem for my ebooks). I'll probably buy a case for it, to hopefully prevent the crack from spreading. I definitely regret not getting a case from day one.

I'll wait for replacement screens to hit the secondary market, then I'll replace it myself (I've replaced a lot of cellphone screens). It should be part # ED060KH6.

Does Kobo offer insurance? Or are you just suggesting I add this to my home owner's insurance?

I would also strongly suggest using a cover. Hitting a corner like that could easily crack the screen, but if it would have been somewhat cushioned hitting the corner of the reader and probably wouldn't have cracked the screen. All of my readers are always in covers. I've dropped them 2.5' onto concrete before without so much as a scratch on them.

Thanks! I'll get a case today.

If I ever succeed at manually replacing the screen, I'll update this thread or start a new one. I figure people would be interested in that.

It's always more than a few dollars. It's always wise not to insure small cheaper items like this. It's not worth it in the short term. You are adding like 30-40% of the initial cost. Maybe more.

You can sometimes catch a good sale at Square Trade, I've gotten 3 years coverage for $35 in the past which included accidental damage. If you're hard on your readers, it's worth it.
