Using the Viewer in Calibre v4 I could display the Meta Data and the "Description" was displayed.
I recently upgraded to Calibre v5 and the Viewer does not display the "Description" with other Meta Data. Is that intentional, a bug, or am I missing something? ![]() |

Thank you for responding, but I'm still a bit confused. I am viewing the Meta Data from within the viewer. I don't see any "book icon" anywhere in the viewer. What "book icon" are you referring to?

My bad. I missed VIEWER.
That has a toolbar Icon multi-colored Flower. (it seems, this is only available if the toolbar is enabled (Preferences: Miscellaneous ) |

Thanks. I got the toolbar showing in the Viewer, but I don't see any multi-colored flower.
Shortcut ctrl +n pops up the Meta Data, but the "description" or comments are not shown as they were in previous versions. Interesting mystery. |

Are you sure the Description is in the format your viewing, I just fell into that rabbit hole. It was in the library metadata database, but not in the epub. You need to use Polish Book to get it in the epub. I clicked the blue circle 'i' to get that display, Ctrl+F11 to toggle the toolbar (same as always) BR Last edited by BetterRed; 01-18-2021 at 05:55 PM. |

This doesn't work:
<dc:description>This is the note I want to display</dc:description> This works: <dc:description><div><p></p><p>This is the note I want to display</p></div></dc:description> Wrapping the text with: <div><p></p><p> and </p></div> solved the problem. I have no idea why. Maybe somebody understands. |

Actually, I'm editing the description in the opf file with the book editor.

That should show up in the viewer. But, I don't trust myself to do any real editing there. And it is not reflected back to the library. I would recommend doing the editing in the metadata editor and then using Polish books or the Modify ePub plugin. Calibre will also update the book when you open it in the editor (unless you turn that off).

I have turned off the automatic book update. I really do prefer the more direct approach.
Remember, this problem did not exist when I was using Calibre v4. What changed to cause this? |

As well as including Python 3, calibre version 5 includes a new version of the Qt libraries.
There were a number of issues in the new Qt that related to Comments. I can't recall the details, I suspect you've ran into one or more of them. In the example I posted it seems to have barfed on left/right double quote entities - no idea why, maybe it wants unicode - in the scheme of things a mere bagatelle ![]() BR |
