Calibre 5.7.2 Hangs When Restarted In Debug Mode

I am running Calibre 5.7.2 in Ubuntu 20.10. In order to diagnose a problem with the DeDRM plugin I have tried, multiple times, to reboot in debug mode, both from the menu and by using Shift+Ctl+R. Each time, the program hangs. Nothing is clickable and when I minimize the window I see the box that reads "Starting up, please wait...Initializing user interface". I end up having to kill the process. Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas? UPDATE: After killing the process, I do get this log, which doesn't seem to me to shed any light: DBusExport: Failed to detect window status notifier, with error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying calibre Debug log calibre 5.7.2 embedded-python: True is64bit: True Linux-5.8.0-33-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.2.5 Linux ('64bit', 'ELF') ('Linux', '5.8.0-33-generic', '#36-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 9 09:14:40 UTC 2020') Python 3.8.5 Interface language: None Successfully initialized third party plugins: Gather KFX-ZIP (from KFX Input) (1, 36, 0) && DeDRM (7, 0, 0) && Package KFX (from KFX Input) (1, 36, 0) && KFX metadata reader (from KFX Input) (1, 36, 0) && KFX Input (1, 36, 0) calibre 5.7.2 embedded-python: True is64bit: True Linux-5.8.0-33-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.2.5 Linux ('64bit', 'ELF') ('Linux', '5.8.0-33-generic', '#36-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 9 09:14:40 UTC 2020') Python 3.8.5 Interface language: None Successfully initialized third party plugins: Gather KFX-ZIP (from KFX Input) (1, 36, 0) && DeDRM (7, 0, 0) && Package KFX (from KFX Input) (1, 36, 0) && KFX metadata reader (from KFX Input) (1, 36, 0) && KFX Input (1, 36, 0) Turning on automatic hidpi scaling devicePixelRatio: 1.0 logicalDpi: 96.0 x 96.0 physicalDpi: 102.45378151260503 x 102.35820895522387 Using calibre Qt style: True [0.00] Starting up... Since you have Calibre 5.7.2, go download and install the DeDRM v7.0.0b4 plugin.

Thanks. There may be problems with my database or HD but the "startup time" seems to be a reflection of how long I wait before I kill the process; the debug window pops up immediately AFTER I kill the process and shows a startup time roughly equal to how quickly I let Calibre run before doing so. |

Seems I need to learn more about posting to this forum; timed out trying to update my incomplete previous post. It is debug mode, not DeDRM, that I meant to be asking about. The DRM plugin I've been running was loaded from a file downloaded recently, DeDRM_plugin_7.0.0b4.zip. It has mostly worked but I was trying to investigate its failure with a specific book -- AZW3, purchased from Amazon for my Kindle Paperwhite. Apprentice Alf recommends removing the book, running Calibre in debug mode, and then adding the book again to generate a verbose record. My problem is not with the general operation of Calibre, which runs fine in regular mode so far. I've renamed the library, started over, run a library maintenance check and found nothing. So, to be clearer than I was before: Is anyone experiencing difficulties running Calibre 5.7.2 in debug mode? |

Recommendations: Down grade calibre to 5.6.0--using the Reverting to a previous version instructions at https://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux run calibre in debug see if that fixes the problem. From past experience possible hd drive going bad, a corrupted font, or a malformed epub. bernie | |

Just run calibre in a terminal as calibre-debug -g if for some reason you cant restart in debug mode. |

...and, for the sake of closure, I will report that I was able to generate detailed output using Kovid's suggestion, which allowed me to figure out that the problem I was experiencing with DeDRM was due to, um, stupidity on my part. I hadn't added any DRM'ed books for quite a while and had neglected to add the serial number for my NEW Kindle. So when I downloaded the books recently, specifying my current device, the plugin didn't have the key it needed. Once I saw the messages output in debug mode it only took a couple of minutes to figure out the problem. Thanks to everyone! |
