Unhappy Problems with screen after update

I have a M3 N905 Touch. It has worked quite well until I was stupid and decided to update it to the latest firmware.
The device works ok but:
1. When I try to scroll down the lsit of books the bottomm third of the screen turns black and the device hangs.
If I touch the screen it goes back to the top of the book list.

2. I opened a boook and that was ok. Everything works ok (next and previous page etc). If I try to advance 10 pages or so the same thing happens as with the contents list.

I have tried the following stable releases
3.16.0 , 3.19.5761 , 4.12.12111 and 4.23.15548 All unpatched. The same problem occured.

Original firmware is 2.1.0 (r42472, 28.08.2012)

On resetting the device everything works as it should so I don't think it has a fault anywhere. I only load books from calibre, wifi is off and the sql file has a blank user line so I don't keep getting pestered.

Advice would be appreciated, I looked through the forums but couldn't find anything to help. I like the device even though it has no light and as it works maybe I should leave it alone.

By "M3 N905 Touch", do you mean the N905C Touch? That is the model number that I would expect to be on the end of the device. Kobo called this "Low Cost N905C Model". That's mainly to check and make sure we know what device you actually have.

I have the latest firmware on my N905 Touch. That is the original model. There are no issues with it like you describe. The touch works correctly, and, apart from bad ghosting, the screen updates with no issues. I haven't heard of any problems with the other versions of the Touch.

As you state you do not have WiFi on, I assume you are sideloading the firmware. Are you using the correct update package, and are you putting all files from it onto the device? If you are just using the KoboRoot.tgz file, you will be missing updated the kernel. A mismatch between the kernel and the executables, could cause these sort of problems.

Hi
I am such a dummy. I read the model number without glasses

I have just loaded a firmware for a Mk4 (sulk) and see what happens.

If it still doesn't work I will go back to the factory standard for a while as I need the reader and will put books on a sep. card.

Many, many thanks for your help.

OK- Great
I put 4.19.14123 on and it works

Of course there are some things that are very different. The scroll bar for pages is HUGE. It seems faster and when starting out of the standby mode the screen seems to refresh 2 or three times instead of once as it used to. I suppose this is a charasteristic of the e-ink.

I will put my books on a sep. SD card and mabye try the latest version. I might later try to patch something but I don't really understand the benefits. Nickel seems to be interesting but at the end of the day by adding extras will I overload it so that it gets really slow.

For the future I would like to buy a reader with a light instead of my clip on one. That would bring me more than anything else.

Once again thanks for the help.

One thing I forgot can I still use the newer devices without registering and so on. I mainly use Calibre and I don't really want to be tied.

You should look through the patches, there are many tweaks that make reading more enjoyable, including a less cluttered homescreen. They're pretty much foolproof now and do not cause any problems. I have 40 of the various patches enabled, plus the Miniclock add-on, and there is no slowdown at all from it.

Registering the device with Kobo does not tie you to using Kobo or limit you in any way. I registered with an email that has no payment info attached to it (I was always concerned about losing the ereader and someone being able to instantly buy hundreds of books on my account), keep wi-fi off, and sideload all my books that I purchase mostly from Amazon lately, but also Smashwords and other smaller sellers. I'm not tied at all to Kobo.

Yes,, there's a recent thread on this,, I'm too lazy to look it up.

There's DIY with database tools, or just grab a copy of a blank database and go.

Hello everyone
Thanks for the help. I will try the firmware when I can find some time. I am supposed to be retired but still working and renovations and, and and...... No excuse really.

I have a feeling that the device is actually on its way out. I no longer have the screen problem. It hangs every now and then, the screen seems to have developed artefacts that come and go and the battery drains quickly.

I have once again restored to the factory default but the whole thing doesn't seem stable anymore. I don't thinkt the firmware is corrupted as it still starts.
Maybe I am imaging things.

If I have to replace it is the Clara HD a good option. I am in Germany and Kobo closed down here a couple of years ago but we can still get the devices. I don't need anything more expensive and I don't want a Kindle and be tied to Amazon.

For a Reader with a 6" screen, the Clara HD is a good choice. Some of us prefer a larger screen and if you do too, I would suggest the Libra H2O with a 7" screen.
