Hello!
I upgraded the firmware on my Kindle DX a few years back when Amazon put out that notice that if you didn't update it, you'd no longer be able to connect to the Kindle store. So I updated it to 2.5.8 and left it in my locker at work for quite some time. I fired it up last week and noticed I could no longer connect it properly to the internet. I tried factory restoring and all that and it did nothing. This is the Kindle DX (G) that has free 3G (no wi-fi). Anyway, I could connect to the Kindle store but I couldn't download anything. I can't register it to me because every time I try it says it cannot connect to the internet. I googled this quite a bit and it turns out it's because my Kindle thinks it's the year 1969. And the only way to fix it? Jailbreak it, of course! Which led me to this forum. I believe I applied the jailbreak properly. I uploaded "Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dxg_install.bin" to the root of my DX and applied the update. It rebooted. There is ANOTHER glitch with this 2.5.8 update where the sleep/power switch does nothing, so I can't really "check" but I am sure it went through. My question is the following, because I haven't been able to figure out anything further on my own:
This is the only large Kindle ever made so I really, really want to get this thing up and running again. I really appreciate any help anyone can give! |

Small update. I got USBnetwork running, and I am at the part where I SSH into my Kindle.
However, it keeps rejecting the password. I know for a fact the password is fiona055 Is there any reason it would be rejecting it? Here is the command I am using: C:\WINDOWS\system32>ssh 192.168.15.244 Welcome to Kindle! t25@192.168.15.244's password: Permission denied, please try again. |

oh geez, another update.
I figured out the issue. The guide I was following didn't mention this. But the command was apparently supposed to be ssh root@192.168.15.244 I didn't have the username "root" in there. So I figured it all out! I set the clock with the following command: date 110623222020 The only thing I still desperately need help with is the sleep issue. The power button will not put the device in sleep mode, and it won't take it out of sleep mode. I know the power button is fine because if I hold it for a long period of time it will reboot the Kindle. It's a glitch that happened with the latest update. I am hoping there is some sort of jailbreak software fix for this! |

You're talking about a ten-year old device. I've never actually heard of anything like that (I think, but, again, ten-year old). And I certainly have no such issue on either a K2i on 2.5.8 or a K3 on whatever the final 3.x release is.
And on a more general etiquette level, your post is less than 24H old. |

It's the only 9" e-ink e-reader. I would have bought a newer one if they made it. I am just wondering if there's a jailbreak for it where I can use a different button for sleep mode. Maybe holding the menu button, or something like that? Has anyone ever made a jailbreak app like that? |

Assuming you have jailbroken the device you should be able to use Launchpad to issue the appropriate command when a hot-key sequence you define is entered. I don't know the command offhand, but I am sure someone else here does.
The next question, however, is will your power button wake it up once you put it to sleep? If not, you will be left with a case where you may need to SSH into the unit to wake it up. As it is asleep the keyboard will be ignored, so this might be your only way to wake it. Dave |

I'd be willing to completely "give up" a button to act as the power button. For example, the volume buttons which I never use. Is there any way to do this? Edit: it appears as though it's definitely a software issue. If I move the power slider like 20 times quickly the Kindle DX reboots. It's really werid. Sorry for all these "updates" but this forum does not let me edit posts older than a few minutes old.
I turned off the screen saver by SSHing in and running the command "lipc-set-prop com.lab126.powerd preventScreenSaver 1" So I more or less solved my issue, except now my battery is only going to last 2 days instead of a month. Is there some sort of jailbreak alternate screen saver app? Like one I can run from the menu or by typing something in? Perhaps something like that can solve all my issues with this thing. I really don't know what's up with the power switch on this thing. It does NOT respond to putting the Kindle DX into sleep mode, or taking it out of sleep mode. But if I hold it for 40 seconds, my Kindle DX reboots, which means the power button/slider, physically speaking, is working just fine. It's just that the Kindle DX doesn't respond to it for some reason. Unless it's for a forced reboot! I received this as a gift from my sister who is no longer with us and I'd do anything to keep using this thing for as long as possible. It reminds me of her every time I use it. Plus I just love how big it is. No one makes one this size any more. So I am really desperate to keep using it. I feel like there's gotta be a jailbreak way around this to fix it. |

Nothing that's not a Kindle (in any shape or form, by which I mean, that includes the Kindle app on Android) will be able to "connect" to the Kindle store. The Kindle ecosystem is a closed garden.

Nothing other than Amazon's hardware/software will connect to the Kindle store. OTOH, using tools such as calibre allows you to work around those limitations. Some such as the Boox products run Android and you can install the Kindle app.
