help setting up kindle android app please

I normally use Calibre and Moon+ Reader Pro and very carefully select the ideal size font and typeface.

I needed Prime for something else so thought I'd take a look at the free books in Kindle for prime users.

Fine except the settings for typeface and size of font seem very crude compared with what I'm used to in Moon+ Reader Pro and being used to be able to strip out layout etc having the layout fixed seems a bit archaic.

Is there a way to read Kindle books in Moon+ Reader Pro or are they DRMed in someway to lock you into their android app? I'm not objecting to the DRM just the lack of control unless I'm missing a magic menu or something.

Thanks John

There should be 8-12 font sizes and several fonts to choose from. Tap the upper part of the screen and there should be a "Aa" menu for the page controls.

You can't strip out the layout in the Kindle app. Neither can you read Kindle books in another app, unless you remove the DRM and convert them. If you want to know how to do that, consult the Apprentice Alf's blog and read the Kindle for PC sticky thread here in the Calibre subforum.

Yes but compare that to the choice in Moon+ Reader Pro and there is no comparison. I found the Aa bit but hoped there was something better.

You can pick up a free book at smashwords and Moon+ Reader has a free version to do the comparison.

Thanks John

I am aware of DRM strippers but considering the market share that Amazon has I would have expected their reader to be a bit better.

Thanks for the thoughts.

why should amazon bother - as things are, you are incentivised to by a proper kindle reader, which suits them ( the preferences within Kindle for PC/ Mac.. are even more limited )

you should also be aware that to use the kindle android app, you are logged into your amazon account with 1 click digital purchasing unavoidably on- so 1 misjudged tap will buy the matching audio book as you cannot suppress the in-app banner offering for that . and a similar blunder in the prime video android app can saddle you with an expensive and not-returnable movie. proper purchase/parental controls only work on amazon hardware.

I've been doing most of my reading in Moon+ for the past year or two and I buy most of my books from Amazon, usually on my Kindle. As Sirtel suggested, Apprentice Alf can make it very simple to read your Kindle books in Moon+, which is what I've been doing.

That said, I've read the last couple of books on my Paperwhite and in the Kindle app on my phone when I'm away from the house. While I sure agree that it's less flexible than Moon+ I find it perfectly adequate. It doesn't give me the number of options Moon+ does but it's still way more than I used to get those many years I read paperbacks. It's a decent app.
