Advice about setting up second kindle account
I’m looking for some advice on setting up a second kindle account. I’m a Canadian, but have a US kindle account. I started it before kindle books came to Canada.
I’ve explored transferring my US account to my Canadian Amazon account, but learned from Amazon customer service that I can’t take my ebooks with me, because my Canadian Amazon account uses a different email address. I recently bought an Amazon Echo speaker, and would like to listen to books via the speaker. If I buy a second kindle, and register it to my Canadian Amazon account, would I be able to purchase ebooks from the Canadian site on it? Amazon knows I have accounts in both countries, because when I buy a kindle from Canada, they preregister it to the US site for me. So, I’m not trying to trick them or anything. I just can’t find a policy anywhere on the site to see if Amazon allows two accounts for ebooks? PS: or could I deregister one of my older kindles from the US site, register it to Canada, and buy new books on it? Last edited by Victoria; 07-25-2020 at 09:33 AM. |

Sorry can't help, don't own kindles, but looking forward to some answers.
To me it would be a simple as making sure all books on kindle, deregister, log onto new account register and upload books. But have a feeling nothing miss simple when it comes to bullies like Amazon. |

I think, but am not positive, that e-ink Kindles no longer keep Amazon content when de-registered.
There are several users on the Amazon forums that are knowledgeable about using Kindles in locations other than the US. I'd post over there. The forums are found by going to Amazon HELP, scroll down and select NEED MORE HELP, then select ASK THE DIGITAL AND DEVICE COMMUNITY. Personally, I suggest using Calibre to store all of your books, and don't worry about which store they came from. This has nothing to do with Amazon being bullies, but it does have to do with them operating under the various e-book laws pertaining to each country. |

Gandulf and Deskisamess thanks for your replies.
Gandulf, I tried just switching the email address with my Amazon account, and was warned my content would be lost. So I’m sure content is removed when you deregister as well. The books are directly tied to you via the address. Deskisamess, thanks for the link! I’ll try the Amazon forums for their advice. |

There are ways to solve your problem. The first thing to do is download all of your Kindle eBooks from the USA via the Download & Transfer via USB. Install the DeDRM plugin for Calibre from https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com and remove the DRM. That will get you a copy of all your eBooks with no DRM. Once setup and working, you can remove the DRM from your Canadian eBooks as well. Another thing to do is register a copy of the Kindle app to your US account. That way when you unregister your Kindle, you won't lose anything. But you will need to decide which device you won't be using the app other then keeping your content in the US. I suggest reading the thread on Kindoe for PC/MAC because that has a lot of good information there and you can ask about the app if you use Windows. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=283371 |

If you want to keep access to both stores, you could do two kindles on two different accounts/two emails.
What I'm doing, is one account on kindle for pc, one on a kindle (also both different accounts, one US, one Canadian). I rarely use my USA account lately for ebooks due to exchange rate, but haven't abandoned it, because there are still deals that pop up on the US site only. I don't actually read on the kindle, since I have another ereader, it was purchased for calibre backup reasons. My understanding is you can definitely switch between market places with one kindle, but you can only access one at a time. So if you don't intend to use the US store for ebooks any longer, yes, deregister, and re-register with the different Canadian account should work, I would think. |

The OP has multiple kindles and is specifically considering de-registering an older kindle. There is no need to delay that since other kindles are still registered to that account.

An older version may retain Amazon content when it de-registered. But I don't know the cut off.

Just tring to understand things, so if you don't have a kindle registered on an account you will also loose your books on Amazons server ?

But I actually think that you won't be able to merge the accounts even then because of restrictions on book sales. The books you've bought on your USA account might have a different publisher in Canada. You can certainly deregister one of your devices from your USA account, and then register it with your Canada account. |

Books bought from Amazon will remain on your account unless explicitly permanently deleted. |

Back when Kindles were first introduced, before Amazon offered any family account sharing, you do what they called the account shuffle. You would register to one account, download your books, then deregister that Kindle, and register it to another account, and download the books.
So you ended up with books from different accounts on the Kindle. (This never worked for Fire tablets.) Now, with current Kindles, that same account shuffle doesn't work. Now, if you deregister a Kindle, all Amazon content is removed. But now Amazon offers Family Share, (or whatever it's called) so people in the same household can share books from two different accounts. That account shuffle was even explained by Kindle CS, when users asked support about sharing books. Instructions were even shared on the old Kindle forum by Mods and those involved in the old Kindle Pro program. |

The Family Library is much more convenient than messing around with registering/deregistering. You can just choose which of your books get shared with the other(s) in your Family*
*Up to two adults and four children. |
