How to change main internet source

My home wife has become very hit and miss, and I want to use my 4g internet instead. I set up a hotspot which connects my laptop and calibre device (samsung tablet) but I cant get it to work. Am I missing something please?

Yep

WiFi to WiFi is contained onto your Local Area Network (LAN) which is private.
Your 3G goes off site (wireless company) and back in on however the laptop connects via the WAN (Wide Area Network) Which is PUBLIC. When you do this, you need to grant access (sometimes refer to as a port pin hole). There are a ton of security issues that need attention when you do this (not done casually and stay secure)

Not sure what device you establish the hotspot with (laptop, tablet). But theoretically, you don't need any internet connection at all.

When I set up a hotspot on my phone I can switch on the option that connected devices see each other. That's turned off by default. Can you try that if available and see if that helps? You could also try setting up the hotspot with the other device if available.
