Kindle 5th Generation (2012) Collections

Hello.

I recently got my hands on an old Kindle 4th gen (the one with the 5 way directional buttons). It's a hand me down, and it's serving its purpose. Sometimes I get the screen refreshing thing but I got over that.

I'm loading books on it by sending my files via email through Calibre. I find it the easiest way for me to read, since I also have the app on my phone. Whispersync is a dream since it also works for non-Kindle books (I used to have a Kobo before, but I don't think it ever did that, anyways).

My main issue right now is collections. Since the 4th Gen has a clunky UI, and finding books in the same series is kinda getting to be a chore. I tried the Calibre plug in, but the collections it makes doesn't seem to get saved when I reset my Kindle. Manually making collections on the device seems to survive a factory reset.

I've noticed there's an option in the archive items to add other device collections, but it's always empty. None of the collections I make on the website and on the app show up there.

The collections I make on the web reflect on the app, and it's easier to sort books/docs using a browser than on my Kindle.

I guess my main question is (sorry for rambling), is accessing collections saved on the cloud not at all possible for the Kindle 4th Gen? It's not really a big problem, but it does make sorting waaaaay easier if I can just do them on the web, since I also have to do it for my app anyways. Might as well just do it once if it's possible.

Thanks for any info you guys might provide.

PS: I know accessing collections on the cloud is possible on the newer Kindles, but with everything happening right now a new Kindle is not just possible. I'd like to have a paperwhite, but even if I did have the extra cash, no stores/deliveries are open

A sale wouldn't really do me any good. As I have mentioned, even if I did have the money, there are no stores or delivery services available here. A lot of places are on lockdown.

I just wanted to know if the 4th/5th gen can access collections on the cloud.

Way back when I remember setting up calibre to add the series name and number to the start of the name of the book on export. Perhaps that could work for you?

I'm already doing this. So it's easy to keep track of what's what.

It's basically just my "ocd" wanting to have everything neatly sorted in collections, since I mostly read series books.

I also tried using the PC version to create collections. It seems that my old Kindle recognizes it and is allowing me to copy the collections there. But the problem is Kindle PC doesn't allow downloading documents, so all I'm importing are blank collections, and I still have to manually add books to the collections. Which is clunky on a non-touch screen lol

When you make a collection on Device its Saved to the Cloud also. So you only need to DL it next time. Now ONLY the Ebooks you Paid for on Amazon Automatic get placed into the Collection as you DL them.... Some times after DL a few you reboot the device so it will put them into the collection. IF the ebooks are Side loaded from other places They have to be put in collection by you ...

To further elaborate, if the ebooks are side loaded using USB, then Barbara's statement is, in fact, true. However, if you buy books from other places and send them to your Kindle cloud, they show in the collections on all devices once you've added them to a collection on one device. No need to re-add them.

For some reason, this isn't happening in the K4 non-touch.

I'll have to make do until I can afford to buy a new kindle lol.

They're so expensive from where I'm from.
